It may or may not be safe, but you can no longer buy or sell Linden Dollars anywhere except the official Linden Dollar Exchange.  Linden Lab will not accept prepaid or debit cards.  You must use a major credit card, or a verified PayPal or Skrill account as your payment method.

You can't use prepaid or gift cards in the Linden Exchange, so that explains part of your problem.  If you try to use an alternate exachange, you'll have a much larger problem:

4.7 Linden Dollars may not be exchanged outside of the LindeX exchange.

Any purchase of Linden Dollars from anywhere other than the LindeX is not permitted and is considered a violation of these Terms of Service which may result in suspension or termination of your Account.

You may use PayPal or Skrill if you don't want to use an approved credit card.  You will find that both of those services will let you add money to your account with them from a prepaid card, if you wish.  As long as you maintain a cash balance in a PayPal or Skrill account, you can use it on the LindeX.
