Were interested in the land beside ours on mainland, not same region, can they be joined?

We own a half sim on mainland, the land beside ours finally is up for sale but of course it is not the same region. Can we have them joined somehow to make 1 sim?

No.  Regions are on separate simulators. Even if they are next to each other in world, there is no way to guarantee that they are running on related machines.  A region is 256 x 256 meters -- a size that cannot be changed.  You can certainly own property on more than one region, but they will be separate properties.

Some large stores or builds in SL provide examples of what Rolig is talking about.  They often have caution signs, "SIM CROSSING" to warn avatars they are about to change regions.
