OKies,

First of all, a DJ giving away a promotional T-Shirt [usually promoting themselves] when you tip them is not dangerous. Landlords giving prim counters and the like as well. These 2 class of individuals would have been banned in minutes if they gave out objects that were "Griefer Oriented" in nature.

As for things from strangers, just say "No Thank You" unless you know the exact source of their kindness.

Evil Strangers give out:

1) Scripted linden transferring objects hidden as useful tools: [if you rez something and it asks you to grant permission to transfer lindens just say no and delete it immediately from the world and your inventory.]

2) Griefer poofer Generators that self replicate. [this can get you banned from SL if you set them off in the wrong place.]

Friends and Annoying Strangers have given away:

1) Ad laden AO's that SPAMed the local area with reminders in open chat.

2) Griefer poofer Generators that self replicate. [this can get you banned from SL if you set them off in the wrong place.]

3) Avatar deformers.

4) Avatar locating scripts in otherwise seeming harmless objects.

5) Chat forwarding scripts in otherwise seeming harmless objects.

6) Stolen goods. [Hint: Oh Look, this is all the hair made from so and so.]

7) Stupid sex animations that go off in public.

... The list goes on.

Bree,

KarenMichelle's list is very accurate, but don't let the fact that people CAN give you bad things or annoying practical jokes scare you.  MOST people who give you things in Second Life do so with good intentions.

The two most dangerous things that you can get from people are:

1.  An object that, as KarenMichelle describes, asks for permission to take $L from your account when you rez it.  Some things, like vendors and rental boxes that you use in your business, need to have this permission.  But if something you are given asks for this permission when you rez it, and you are not expecting it, DON'T click "Allow"!  Just delete it, and delete it from your inventory too.

2.  A URL in chat, IM, a notecard, or email.  These can be "phishing" scams.  If you click the URL, it will open a page that looks like a normal SL website login.  But if you enter your user name and password, the scammer gets them and can hijack your account and take all your $L, or use it to commit Terms of Service violations.  Be careful about clicking links you get from strangers!

I cover these, and the other things KarenMichelle lists, in my Avatar Safety class.  It's open to everyone, and it's held at Caledon Oxbridge University on Saturdays at 1200 (noon) SL Time.

Simply do not accept from an unknown source, a DJ is not going to mess up there client base by giving away grievers but an individual who can not be found does not give a hoot. Well unless in RL some stranger gives you car keys and say there you go drive away and enjoy and you happy with that, good luck.
