That's right.  You are only allowed to fly in the one part of the tutorial where flying is enabled.  The other parts are set to "no Fly" so that you won't fly accidentally when you are supposed to be jumping.  Be sure that you are actually in the Fly Enabled area.

Well, you're not "stuck".  For one thing, you are not required to complete the tutorial.  You can leave anytime and go anywhere you like in Second Life.

But Rolig is right, most of Social Island is a "no fly" area.  You can fly only in the designated flying area.  There are two ways around this, if you feel encumbered by being limited to the ground.

First method:  Go to the flight-enabled area.  Hit the F key or hold PgUp for a couple of seconds to fly.  You can now fly anywhere on Social Island.  The "no fly" restriction will not affect you until you touch down in the No Fly area.

Second method:

  • Activate the Advanced menu in your top menu bar by hitting CTRL+ALT+D
  • Click Advanced/Fly Override, or hit CTRL+ALT+V.  This allows you to fly even in no fly zones.  NOTE:  If a land owner has set "no fly" for their land, and you go flying about, they may decide to ban you from their property for flouting their rules.  This is a risk you take when using the Fly Override setting.

This is a question about Learning Island, not Social Island. Lindens have designated only one parcel on Learning Island as a Fly area, so that new residents can learn and practice flying there. You are right that Social Island, also, is entirely a No Fly region, but that's a separate question. It is possible to fly on Social Island by using the override you described, but it is strongly discouraged by the Lindens.
