  1. There is no way to stop this except for parents to take responsibility for their kids and watch what they do on the internet. blah blah blah parental responsibility .. Well, that counts for nothing legally, so I guess you can shut up.
  2. There are many many merchants (as an example) who now operate on PG land specifically for the purpose of being reachable by the teen market when that happens. Splitting the mainland would require something Zindra-esque to take place, and we all know how much happy fun that all was. I accept your point about not being Pareto Optimal, but, in my opinion, the non-educational market for 16/17s is so small as to be insignificant. The benefits of upgrading mainland sims from PG to Mature so greatly outweigh the disadvantages as to be self-evident. Remember, Mature = Moderate = normal. It is critically important to prevent Disneyfication of the main grid. The non education market is insignificant today. Look at what happened to IMVU (and not an educator in sight).
  3. I believe this is a simple, easy and elegant solution that is also Pareto Optimal (some people are made better off while no one is made worse off). There are many many merchants (as an example) who now operate on PG land specifically for the purpose of being reachable by the teen market when that happens. Splitting the mainland would require something Zindra-esque to take place, and we all know how much happy fun that all was.
  4. No, the only way this would be secure would be if teen accounts are explicitly disconnected from receiving objects from other avatars, and could only get objects that are dispensed from estates. My thoughts exactly.
  5. The devil as always is in the detail. How will LL ensure all teens, ESPECIALLY the 13-15 years olds don't have access to adult material? Will inventory transfers be prohibited or restricted in some way? How will LL ensure all teens, even those in the educational walled gardens are not able to just go anywhere they please in SL?
  6. Please find me a single instance in this thread where people against this idea have attacked those posters who are for it with as much repetition and fervor as you and Werewolf have. I got sick of reading your attacks and decided to push back and now I see you preaching about how we should refrain from such things. LOL What you really mean is that we should just shut up and quietly take your abuse. Not hardly. Only history is attacking people on this one issue. Probably really looking forward to being able to change his name to something less pretentious.
  7. Too bad you guys couldn't figure out a way to integrate it more closely with Second Life. Thats the idea, bin AV united and add a facebook of Second Life to the Second Life website where we can call add our friends and pictures!! Because you know what SL really needs is everyones profiles on the web. Wait .. if our profiles are on the web, why do we even need them in world - Genius!
  8. ....You want to make people happy, let them know that you care what they want. All you have proved is that you plan on doing what the hell you want anyway. Thats actually really easy. Make teleports work, sim border crossing, and a whole raft of ignored and punted issues on the JIRA .. If you do one thing this year, just one thing - fix group chat, please !!
  9. If someone does a class-A job of impersonating you... you've got them dead to rights committing fraud, clear-cut perma-bannable offense. No hearsay, no he-said-she-said, no "I didn't know" excuses, clear, deliberate, permanently punishable fraud. Cut and dried in a way that the other two examples wouldn't be. Yes, because those people are going to be scared of a permaban. That is simply an expected and accepted part of the plan. Same as all the green hair I have to buy, parody will be ok wont it?
  10. Thank you. Thank you for ignoring us and making trivial changes to the project and pushing it through regardless. Have to wonder why you even bother asking for comments, just do what the hell you like and to hell with the residents. Seems to be the TAO of Linden Lab these days. Listening to the residents, what a load of .... You are still protecting the name Linden, so you still recognize our core concern, yet you don't see it being at all hypocritical in protecting your in-world identities and screwing us out of ours. I would like to thank you personally Jack Linden, but that doesn't mean what it used to.
  11. Where exactly is this leg up you speak of? Is it the part where we click "upload model" and then rez it in a test environment? The advantage is you have a better understanding of what works and what doesn't. You have already done the trial and error learning how SL renders mesh and know some pitfalls to avoid. You have a perceived reduced time to market.
  12. Yes. Everyone extol the virtues of modeling software by watching demo reels on youtube. That really shows off the class and quality of the tools, nothing at all to do with the render engine (that might even be totally custom) or the artists animation skills .. because both of those are relevant to the discussion of making meshes for Second Life ! Demo reels sell software the same way half naked women sell motorbikes.
  13. The funniest thing. Max and Maya are being name dropped like we all know them, those of us that do also know these two puppies might as well be made from solid gold and are so out of the price range a casual builder in SL could afford it's laughable. Authorized reseller has legal copies of 3ds Max starting at $140: http://www.crystal-downloads.com/shop/byvendor/20/'>EDIT : URL OF SCAM WEBSITE REMOVED Um .. Stuff like Max and Maya require a hardware dongle. A USB key that comes with the product that has to be plugged in to use it. No key. No license. NOT LEGIT.
  14. You just proved what I said, PoVRay is a free application that makes 3D meshes and scenes every bit as good as 3D Studio Max, and that is by artists who are expereinced in PovRay, so again, it's doesn't matter the tool you use it's what you as the artist can do with it. I've seen models made in Lightwave that look every bit as good as models made in POVRay, Blender, Maya, Max and it wasn't the tool that created the mesh by itself it was the artist who put their own time and hard work into that model that made it look good. If you knew POV-Ray you would also know that POV-Ray is not a modeller. POV-Ray is a TEXT BASED scene description language with attached raytracer. You can be blistering amazing at it, but were talking less than a fraction of a percent and the final renders you keep looking at can kick the ass of any high end commercial system. (Seriously some amazing POV artists) Minor downside as for the most part POV-Ray doesn't use any mesh of any kind and is therefore useless to this discussion beyond making a simple point. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT Pretty pictures do not demonstrate the modeler. Pretty pictures demonstrate the render engine attached to the modeler. Not all modeling software are equal - In fact being not equal is half the point. Often models will be made in one product (like max or rhino) and then rendered in something else to show it off as part of a larger workflow. What you see has nothing at all to do with the product being talked about or the mesh behind the pretty final render (which can often be so large that even if you could import it into SL, you would need a whole sim just to show it off and kill everyone who turned up and tried to view it real time).
  15. Most people can't make sculpts. The HUGE market for prefab sculpts and in world Prim>>Sculpt tools more than illustrates this point. Funny thing there ninjafoo. I can't make sculpties to save my life But I can sure as heck make a mesh in 3D Studio Max, Maya, Blender, etc. Maybe, but do you have the skills to make it low poly, or spend hours trimming verts? The funniest thing. Max and Maya are being name dropped like we all know them, those of us that do also know these two puppies might as well be made from solid gold and are so out of the price range a casual builder in SL could afford it's laughable.
  16. As for a list of programs that support Collada: http://www.collada.org/mediawiki/index.php/Portal:Products_directory I posted this link earlier. Almost every 3D package is supported, free and pay and otherwise. Actually, when it comes to 3D mesh editing. The tool makes a rather epic difference - I can show you stuff done in povray that looks better then max, does that matter one jot for making mesh for SL (And yes, with enough povscript you can technically do just about anything) Also, just because something claims to import or export a 3D format does not mean it supports it in a way that will be even remotely useful.
  17. Mesh support was announced pretty much exactly one year ago. Plenty of time to choose a 3D modeling application and get familiar with it. At least two of those applications have been available free of charge: Blender and Wings 3D. Maybe they slipped below your radar because they are made by those open-source hippies that you so despise. Please remember that Blender has always been free. Only at one time they used to sell the manual separate. Hence why Blender is confusing as all hell. It was designed to be so you would buy the damn manual. Blender company dies because the product is junk and no one buys the manual. Open source people get it and now its the greatest 3D application since sliced bread because the license comes with a free tree. PLEASE. Blender was a mess 10 years ago and its the same mess today. Just made with lentils. The problem with Blender is the same as it always has been. ITS BLENDER !!
  18. @Prok: Only problem with that argument is anyone can go ahead & study mesh & learn it, same as prim building. You just need motivation to empower yourself & educate yourself in this area. Meshes can be collaboratively worked on, this is what COLLADA stands for actually. Can you make a sculpty? If so, you can definitely learn how to make a mesh. It just takes open mind and desire to learn, same as prim building. There are even free software for mesh & all the knowledge of how to use these tools is free on the internet. So, grab that engine of production if you choose. It is yours too! Nobody needs to be left out in the cold here. Apples and Oranges. In world tools are akin to building with legos. Mesh, thats is way way out of many peoples league. Even with free mesh capable software. Most people can't make sculpts. The HUGE market for prefab sculpts and in world Prim>>Sculpt tools more than illustrates this point. In world tools are broadly accessible and significantly simpler to use than ANY external 3D application, in part because what you are making is in the context of its surroundings and the tools can be leaned in world. Just because the information is on the internet, doesn't mean that mesh is accessible. You can find all the information on the internet to be a theoretical physicist too.
  19. As wonderful and pretty and magical as this will be in SL. It better not mean the end of in world build tools as a focus point for LL development. There is also a minor issue in so far as we can expect to see half of turbo squid dumped into SL in the first week and blatantly sold as an original creation.
  20. When they do something right, we will. In the mean time, confidence in SL is getting a serious ongoing drubbing.
  21. Hi Kim! Welcome to second life! I'm glad you're here. Remember that nearly anything is possible here - from flying to being a mermaid. Friends and family make sl special. Hope to see you soon as a mermaid. - Fleur Asset missing from database.
  22. A: What I really want to do here is help the Lab figure out what the “X Factor” is going to be for Second Life That's actually pretty easy. Just make the product work and quit messing with your customers. Twice since I've been here LL has raised the monthly fee of their most popular product by over 50%. Sim performance at busy places has been horrible, HORRIBLE for +18 months. Service is nearly non-existent nowdays. Zindra. Forums. M. No other company could do so much to alienate nearly all of their existing customers and still be alive and kicking. Make stuff work, don't treat customers like dirt and SL will start to grow by huge numbers again. Exactly.
  23. Exactly, the residents have been the driving force in the growth of SL. We tell our friends, we bring new people in and give them connections to keep them here. We can't do that if we don't have confidence in the future of the platform, it's leadership or it's potential. A good example would be viewer2, it's being rammed down our throats and on mass we seriously don't like it. If this were a game and the viewer were a big plastic accessory, this game would have a very short lifespan.
  24. Good luck in finding an "X Factor", there are as many different reasons for being here as there are people here. Please, just don't discount the things we do that you don't see the point of understand. Get an alt account (and don't tell people you're a linden), spend some serious PERSONAL time in world, make some friends and find some things that interest you. Come back every day, Fall in love. You are never going to find what makes SL special sitting inside the bubble that is Linden Lab.
