  1. Well probably because they were mostly mere humans, Lexxi. They didn't have that cat savoir-faire that would allow them to use that sort of hooded eyes look and say, "You do know that with one swipe of my paw I can have you shooting around the room backwards, bouncing off the walls?"

  2. Happy (belated by the time you see this, probably) rez day, Keli. You are truly a bright spot in all our second lives.

I wanted to post my new movie poster, that Quinn gave me. It had to do with a sort of photo-story thread that involved a whole lot of people. We collaborated on one of the last 'scenes' and the part she wrote reminded me so much of Casablanca that as soon as I saw what she'd written I knew it had to be the final post. Casablanca is one of my very favorite movies of all time. You may remember I even posted a little clip from that movie back on Bastille Day. Anyway Quinn sent me this poster. I put it on the wall last night, but it wasn't until tonight that I got a good look at it and realized....it's the French version! How perfect.

Hi Hippie and Dee and Wildcat and everyone else and Valerie—don't you think Ingrid Bergman was far more attractive than the picture shows?

We've had this discussion numerous times in the past. The truth, of course, is that disclaimers are invalid but that is beside the point.  Someone posted an amusing disclaimer that I so enjoyed that I copied it into my profile.  It goes like this:

This is a disclaimer to void your ToS disclaimer whether you read it or not. And if you try to void my disclaimer of your disclaimer, then I void your disclaimer voiding my disclaimer voiding your disclaimer. I further make it impossible for your disclaimer of my disclaimer to void your disclaimer able to void my disclaimer.

    So there!

    Void should use that one.

To me that first phrase is really the key. We're here because we want to be here. I (and probably  just about everyone else in Second Life) find another reason to like this place almost every single time I go inworld. It may not be unique but it's unique in MY experience. Being in a constant state of irritation with LL just doesn't make any sense.

On the other hand, I think V2 bites :-), and I'm not particularly happy that I'll have to learn a new UI pretty soon unless I can convince my friends not to buy mesh stuff—and that ain't likely.

LOL Bitsy. Reminds me of one of my most embarrassing memories! I had what I think was called 'The Businesswoman' on my very first foray into SL (I later came back and started a real account; this was just a visit). I saw someone in that polka-dot outfit and said, "Oh, I really like your dress.", having not noticed it as one of the starter choices. Of course she was as noobish as I so it didn't matter but if there were any experienced people in chat range they must have guffawed.

A fascinating idea. Kind of a 'World Of Ptavvs' thing. The bots were placed here by someone who came before us. A civilization that has vanished in the mists of time. They were put here to harvest our data but the Daddy Server to which they are directed is no longer there.

There can be only one response: eradication. Unless one of them does learn to pole dance.

Really, all I am saying is this:  That a blanket statement like "not being a premium member makes no sense,"  doesn't necessarily hold water.  Each person needs to decide what the added values that come with Premium membership are worth to them.  In my particular situation I have no need for them so for me I would just be spending money on something I don't need and in my book-keeping ledger would then be a negative number.

Regarding the down turn in the rental market I do know that correlation does not necessarily equal causation.  But what I do know from my conversations with Land Lords and Ladies, the downward spiral coincided with the introduction of the Linden homes.  There could be and probably are other factors involved. For instance, not all Land Lords or Ladies have been saints or angels.  But I know this also, that when your supplier also becomes your competitor, it is a very difficult situation to be in business wise.

    Thanks,

    Perrie

I was going to go back and edit my first post (having agreed with your comment about making a blanket statement) but I see that I prefaced my comment with 'Seems to me' so I'm off the hook :-). I know that sounds glib, but in fact I do know there are a zillion variations on any theme. I still think (THINK, as in don't KNOW) premium membership is a good deal for the typical non-Linden-earning resident.

As for supplier becoming competitor; you're right: that sucks. It happens in RL all the time. It's happened to a couple of  companies I worked for. It killed one of them. LL is in the business of making money for LL (or at least they damned well better be, if they have investors). Any business, RL or SL, is called a 'venture' for a reason. Things change.

ETA: I see I've helped to add to the fog of quotes (I've never been clear on that whole who/whom thing either) by somehow biffing my reply so that it appears to be part of your quoted post.

It really doesn't make much sense NOT to have a premium account.

Yep,.  And for those of us with higher stipends (due to being older accounts) and paying less per month (due to being on the annual fee plan), you actually can make money (though not a lot) by not even logging in to SL but rather cashing out your Lindens from time to time.

And then Govenor Linden comes by and says, "Hey man, you wanna buy some crack, I mean some land?"  :womansurprised:

     "
It really doesn't make much sense NOT to have a premium account.
    "

If you are content living squeezed into a 512 plot of land, yes.  AND if you need the little bit of enhanced support that LL gives to premium accounts it might make sense.

Currently I rent a 2048 with house supplied by Land Lady and get the use of 400 prims.

My monthly rent =  3000L, ~$12.00 per month at current exchange rates.

Tier for a 2048 if I owned     $15.00 per month.

So I am saving $3.00 per month plus the premium fees by renting.

So unless you really, really, really need the enhanced support or are interested in a larger land holding than what I use, it DOES NOT MAKE SENSE to be premium.

Quite seriously I was shocked when I read the announcement in the blogs.  What a miniscule offering to current Premium Members.

And as far as a marketing tool, A new person signing up will have no idea what a sandbox is though the idea of a monthly gift might add a single pennies worth of value.  It fails totally as a marketing tool.

Seriously, I am speaking from the perspective of over 25 years in retail sales and management.  This is the best that they could come up with?  And yes I know there is someone claiming it is based on a proposal they made to Rodvik.  Which essentially means that LL has come up with NOTHING!

For me personally I do not see any added value at all except to LL by taking over the Land / Rental Market.

If you do the math this way, value of a 512 @ $5.00 per month tier @ 128 parcels per region, they are netting $640 per region worth of Linden Homes.  That is compared to (v e r s u s - stupid word filter) the tier a land holder on mainland pays, $195 per month.  And honestly, where does 99% of tech support come from in Second Life?  From Linden Lab or from the Residents?

I have spoken personally with several Land Lords or Lady's in SL and they have either had to surrender land since the inception of the Linden Homes or had to put on hold planned expansions.  It's a mess for them.

Please don't get me wrong.  I see nothing wrong with Linden Lab making money.  I love the World here that they have made available to us.  My only thing here is this, please don't play carrot and the donkey with me. OK?  TY.

Since you were quoting a post that quoted my post; I'll rebut.

It's true, my tier even as a premium on a 2048 would be $15.00/month. But that fee would allow me to own 2560 at no extra charge; a basic resident would be kicked up to the next bracket owning a meter over 2048. Might seem a small matter but in fact there are odd sized lots. Or I could pay for my 2048 and still own a 512 somewhere that I could use to rent out a skybox or two with no extra tier from me.

I don't know what you spend per month but I spend more than my 1290L stipend. That means I would spend that money anyway if I stayed in Second Life and thus the actual cost per month of my premium account, as I said in my original post, is $2.35. I really don't mind paying that for the 'free' extra 512 and the better support options. You've got what sounds like a pretty good deal with your rental and I can see why you'd want to stay as you are, but I still think for most average consumers "it really doesn't make much sense NOT to have a premium account" (Rabid Cheetah was quoting me, then you quoted Rabid Cheetah quoting me, now I've quoted you quoting Rabid Cheetah quoting me. That may not be a Forums record but it's a personal best for me.)

ps: The Linden Home thing was not an option for me, but I don't really believe it made a big difference to the land/rental market. There have always been plenty of freebie homes and most of us eventually roll our own anyway. A builder or landlord who wants buyers or tenants needs to make his or her stuff more attractive than a flat piece of green on the mainland and a Linden Home. That shouldn't be so difficult. I know there was a lot of gnashing of teeth about the Linden Homes but I frankly doubted it had much effect beyond the obvious one of getting new residents inside a place of their own more quickly than would normally be the case.

ETA: My point in the first paragraph about getting 2560 for the 2048 tier is valid; the reference to a basic resident makes no sense at all; a basic resident can't own mainland to begin with. Brain cramp.

anyone that is making enough money to pull some out of SL really has no need for a premium membership unless they want the extra suport...

For the average consumer user, premium makes sense in most of the commercial sense

After I wrote that I was thinking of a good friend who is a DJ and makes all she needs in SL, so Premium would avail her naught. Same thing would apply to any successful creator or entertainer.

I prefer to think of myself as an at least slightly above average consumer :-), but for those like me Premium really does make a lot of sense.

  11. Void Singer wrote:

well considering the actual cost of premium is already offset by L$ over time which can convert to real cash (and adds up to about 3/4 of  yearly subscription), and you do have a small land rental for free, I'd say the value is continuing to grow...

    so currently you get

a free starter home / option to buy your own land on mainland.

    weekly stipend of $L @ 300/wk

    enhanced support options

    protected sandboxes

    free monthly merchandise gifts

    signup up bonus after 6wk

Auto access to Adult land (this comes with having payment info on file, but only works if the idiot land owner didn't set the "age verified" flag)

and shot in the foot if you forget to pay your subscription fees =X

    ETA:

looks like the membership FAQ got updated too, and according to it, the gifts are +copy only... sensible, but utterly useless for furniture and similar items.

You all must be higher priority residents than I am; I've yet to get that email. But the point about cost of Premium Membership I was just thinking about since I just got the notice my next quarterly payment is due (uh, was the sandbox announcement in that email? I admit I didn't read it carefully.)

Paying quarterly my cost is about 90USD a year. The stipend, at 300L/week comes to 15,600L/year, or about 62USD at the current rate of exchange. That means my actual membership cost is about 28USD annually or about  $2.35 a month. That of course is based on the assumption I would spend at least 300L per week, but I think that's a safe assumption for most residents at least once they've been here long enough to decide to stay.

Seems to me, given the other benefits, particularly the 'free' 512 tier, it really doesn't make much sense NOT to have a premium account.

  12. I'd seen 'soda pop' in print and sometimes heard it spoken, maybe on TV shows or in movies, but had never heard anyone actually say that. Where I grew up—West Coast—the common expression was either 'coke' or if you didn't want that brand, you named the one you wanted.  On a short term contract in the upper Midwest I heard everyone saying 'pop', and that was the first time I'd ever actually heard it called that.

Cinn, you're right. We've let the OP down. No flames. Are we allowed to compare RL brand names? I know it's off limits to talk about SL merchants; what are the rules for RL merchants? I shall boldly go where no idiot (to the best of my knowledge) has gone before:

Coca Cola bores me. If I want a cola drink I'll fill a glass with ice cubes, pour in a can or bottle of Pepsi, and wait for the crackling to stop.

Not at all weird. Even as a noob I was unhappy with hats. I saw people with much more knowledge than I just sitting them on top of their hair and living with it, but it always bugged me. I like hats too, and they should be worn right! I have a short hairdo that I found that works perfect for hats. I hadn't actually thought of editing hair; I"m sure I have some that are mod. Would be nice to wear a hat with long hair now and then.

    Nice look.

Here's a pic with a hat a friend pointed me too. I told her I was looking for a helmet; I can't imagine why she thought the mouse ears would be appropriate but she nailed it :-).

And Sylvia, that's my 'hat hair'; I got at Mr.S a long time ago just so I could get hats to fit better. Although I did buy a cloche hat at Jo Yardley's sim that actually came with short hair, which I thought was pretty nice.

Shame on me, but then I probably didn't really give a rat's who was name calling. Still don't. But funny that I actually joined a group that was named for something in one of that particular person's little bon mots.
