Just realized I'm slacking on this thread, my posts make up for less than 10% of all replies.

(This is an example of self-deprecating humor, and is not intended to actually be a "humble-brag".)

Only 429 posts so far in this thread? That’s just not good enough. I suggest you pull yourself aside and have a serious word with yourself about your commitment to this forum. I shall check back again tomorrow and I better see some improvement young man/woman.

  2. About 2 months ago I opened my first new store in a decade, selling full perm PBR materials. I wasn't expecting much, given the negative posts on this forum regarding PBR. However, I've just had my 1000th unique customer!

I’m only a small store with a couple of hundred materials for sale so far. Considering 75% of people apparently use firestorm and can’t use/see PBR, from my tiny dataset, I think this is very positive news for PBR adoption in SL.

  3. Yeah, it looks like you are doing everything right. If the material is not emissive or reflective it should not be appearing as white, even in heavy haze. I’ve never created clothing and don’t know why PBR would appear differently on clothing compared to the static mesh in your store, when viewed in haze. It seems odd.

It seems to be an issue with the Met/rough and haze / hdr function in updated viewer. When i wear other creators PBR clothing it reacts the same way.

not sure if its being worked on. Unless someone has worked this out and can throw me a lifeline 😜 ill just texture it both ways for two viewers and if they NEED to use haze they can use the original non pbr viewer.

Well this sucks! I will have to test PBR in hazey environments later. I started selling PBR a few months ago and decided to include diffuse/spec/normal versions of everything as PBR seems temperamental in SL. I think it’s the best approach to avoid end user disappointment when the PBR doesn't work as intended.

  4. You can check your channels in Painters main 3D viewport. The default view is “Material”, click the drop down arrow to view other individual channels.

The metallic channel should be black.

Assuming the dress is not meant to be reflective, the roughness values should be light grays to white.

As Zal said, the right image looks like it is an emissive issue. Double click the material in SL to open it, select the emissive map (if there is one) and remove it by selecting “none”. Also change the emissive color from white to black.

Screenshots of the ORM map channels from Painter and the PBR material editor in SL may be needed if you want more specific advice.

Fun fact: if I remember correctly, every +3dB represents doubling in volume.

Well now I'm feeling even more disagreeable ... .and yes, I believe I have transitioned into outraged!!!

The gall of that woman! How dare she make a flippant comment about reggae festival decibel levels without conducting extensive research first. I doubt we will be seeing her around here anytime soon. She will be too embarrassed I expect.

Speaking as somebody who had too many school holidays ruined by the holding of a 150 db Reggae festival about a quarter mile from our garden

Oh my actual god. It's statements like this that make me disagreeable!

Inaccurate reporting of reggae festival decibel levels???? Not on Porky Gorky’s watch!

Just last night I was watching Corey Taylor, frontman of Slipknot, having a conversation with Sandi Toksvig about this very subject. I realize this may sound like an LSD flashback or a cheese dream, but it really happened, it was on QI. If I  remember correctly, the world record for the loudest ever gig was about 139 decibels.

  7. I would have liked to have seen Oberwager out there wearing a PBR latex catsuit. He could have simultaneously updated the community about Tilla whilst also twerking around, demonstrating realistic PBR light reflections on his shiny ass. Missed a trick there Brad.

It might have worked for you, but not for me. McD is here in my hometown for more than 40 years now, I haven't even been there twice so far.  Exaggerate a bit is okay in commercials, but the way they do it...
LL should not go that way with advertising IMHO.

Yeah but Mcdonalds is SL in this analogy and you choose to pay to use SL, even though you see it for what it really is. Get people back through the doors and maybe they will also pay to use SL too once they are here.

One should advertise at least somewhat realistic IMHO.
I still remember the shock when I went to a McD the first time, when they opened up shop in my region in RL, after watching a few of their burger commercials.

McD’s make their food look great in advertising. In reality it tastes like arse. They are the most successful fast food chain in the world.

    I rest my case.

  10. As I have mentioned numerous times, I left SL for nearly 12 years (sorry for repeating myself). What brought me back was randomly logging on to Facebook, which I hardly ever use and seeing a post from LL in my feed showing some pretty cool pictures, PBR, Mesh, all that jazz. I was intrigued as this did not look like the SL I knew. I logged in, visited some featured destinations, acted like a tourist for a few weeks and as a result I have returned to the platform.

There must be millions of people out there who are just like me. People who have a preconceived idea of what SL is/was like with little idea of what it has evolved into, at least in places.

So I think LL should take some of the money from the Tilla sale and invest in advertising SL more effectively. Show people the 2024 shiny eye candy. It worked on me.

I like how Oberwolf emphasizes that he cares about Second Life.

    I believe him!

I liked how he seems to be interested in owning a virtual world that he is not fully in control of  and that he feels SL’s continued existence is important for the world. It demonstrates his motivation for continued ownership, beyond just the bottom line.

For anyone that can connect the dots, its obvious that LL plans to bleed Second Life dry, then sell off whatever is left to someone with more money than sence.

Based on what I've learned of the owners, they are going to want to sell I think. But there is little value in a dry cow and I think they will attempt to sell the platform sooner rather than later, before it becomes an udder failure.

And to be clear, I would never define this as "sky is falling".   In my case, the "sky is falling" group to me are very very small and they rarely if ever post of anything positive, always slice-and-dice everything.

The sky has been falling forever it seems. I left SL and these forums for 10+ years and before I left it was filled with doomsayers predicting the end of days, with me being one of them. Yet here we are in 2024. The fact that SL still exists today is amazing and I don’t think we should be counting it out just yet.

If anything, 2k uploads should cost significantly more. I'd be fine with as high as 500 L$.

Otherwise, creators will abuse it. Full stop. That's not even a debate. We already see 1024 on jewelry and buttons and zippers and countless other objects where it does nothing but tank our FPS.

Whilst I totally agree with your sentiment, I don’t think an increased cost or any other barrier to upload will solve the problem that is about to descend upon us with the introduction of 2k.

Many content creators and casual builders buy full perm textures and materials from texture artists. The creators of full perm textures and materials will still pay whatever amount to upload files and will then turn around and sell them at a low price to their customers, because the upload costs will be covered by making multiple sales. As textures are generally sold full perm, they will then likely be redistributed for free or repackaged and sold at an even lower price, as is the trend in SL. Before we know it there will be numerous people in possession of 2K textures who couldn’t care less about optimized texture usage.

2K is "mandatory" because bigger numbers more better

Mesh is "mandatory" because no will buy things made from prim.

2k Will only become mandatory to clueless designers who don't know how to effectively tile/repeat a texture without breaking up repetition.

Also, I still sell prim and scultpie products literally everyday, I also have an old account that still sells just 512 px diffuse textures regulally so I  can only conclude that you really don't know what you are  talking about.

Double check the bit depth of the exported images. SL only allows 8 bit color in textures, but Substance will often export at 16 bit, which the viewer will crunch down (badly) to 8 bit.

    See: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/PBR_Materials#Adobe_Substance_3D_Painter

On that wiki page you linked it says:

    Under "Display Settings":

    Tonemapping - Function: ACES

However ACES is not an option in the function list.

    https://helpx.adobe.com/substance-3d-painter/features/post-processing/tone-mapping.html

I ended up creating a custom shader that generally matches but now I’m wondering, why is the ACES tone mapping function suggested when it’s not an option and did I miss something obvious?

Edit to add - maybe that wiki info was for an older version of Painter? You can set up an ACES color space during project setup.

Yeah I guess that’s true. It would bother my slightly autistic brain though, I would have to change everything.
