  1. Oooooooo Suella started something. I've been on youtube for hours now watching all the results from the different slider settings. I really don't think there is a "perfect" one, its going to depend on so many factors pertinent to each individual avatar.

But this one, this has got to get RICd ;-))

We don't have any means of seeing whether or not an avatar is registered as a scripted agent. What we do have is common sense so, if a pacel's traffic is unrealistically high, and the parcel has bots on it, then it's reasonable to assume that at least some of the bots are not registered as scripted agents.

@Marigold. A bot should be registered as a "scripted agent", not a "non-scripted agent". Real people avatars are non-scripted agents even though they are never refered to as such
    ;)

Thanks, Phil, for the clarification. I'm not much up on the "geekspeak", especially after 2am my time (which unfortunately it was when I was inputting my BS into the forums).  However, hopefully I am blessed with a decent amount of commonsense, and I take a lot of factors into account when determining if avs are traffic bots.

All I want is a fair "game" for all - and maybe one or two photo opportunities for my SL scrapbook :smileywink::smileyvery-happy:

  3. It's certainly looking that way, Dilbert - and you know how it was way back when. One person got 10 bots, the next got 15, then 20 and so on. And the most I counted in one sim was 96 (no room really for regular avatars at that point of course), and there was a marvellous racket - a bit like a load of "mafia" people - renting out bots to different people around the grid.

    Fascinates me to death

Using bots for traffic = pointless and not fun

Taking photos of bots used for traffic = pointless but a lot of fun for me

  4. They're definitely traffic bots, if the traffic count is high. Someone informed me yesterday that when people register their avatars as bots/non-scripted agents, then they don't generate traffic, so that traffic count shouldn't be high.

    AR them!

I'll come in and AR them too.

    Grrrrhhh!!!! Traffic bots.

I went, I saw, and the landowner is seemingly using the bots as demonstration models, but what a poor effort.  It is very obvious that all they are being used for is traffic. I've submitted an AR. Whether LL do anything about it, of course, I can't guarantee, but the more the merrier. Shame when people resort to bots to gain "popularity".

In truth, the only thing that bothers me about the number of bots inworld is if they prevent logins for non-bot residents. I know it's been a long time since we got that message up "Due to an unexpectedly high demand for this service, logins have been temporarily disabled" (might not be a word-perfect quote)

That was only a rumour, and an incorrect one at that. One or two people imagined that there was a fixed number of logins possible and, if bots were using some, then some real people couldn't log in at all. That was totally wrong, but the erroneous idea took hold in some people's minds because they wanted such things to be true to strengthen their attitude and arguments against bots.

One time when bots logging in might have caused delays for real people logging in was when the grid came back up after going down, and stacks of accounts, including bots, were trying to log in at the same time. But even then, bots weren't really holding things up in the way that a few people liked to think they were; i.e. thousand of bots automatically trying to log in simultaneously is what a few people imagined and posted. But, in general, bots didn't and don't do that. Many don't auto-log in at all after being logged out by the system. Many of those that do don't do it simultaneously. Mine, for instance, log in at approximately 1 minute intervals, and they only start doing that after 10 minutes has passed, allowing time for the sim to be updated and come back online, and if the sim isn't online, they wait another 10 minutes, and so on. So the login "problem" was an imaginary one that some poeple liked to think was true.

I think context is key.  First of all, I have to tell you that I don't take notice of rumours unless I can find facts to back them up.

I can tell you things from my own experience. I know it has been a long time since I did actually see the message "Due to an unexpectedly high demand for this service, logins have been temporarily disabled". It was probably actually 2009 when I last saw this message, and I saw it only twice in my entire Second Lifetime.  Both times happened in the same week, and the login screen showed there to be a very high number of users logged in at that time.

My argument against bots is this - and it has nothing to do with bots being able to auto-relog, and nothing to do with everybody trying to log in at the same time including said auto-relog bots - if there are 12 bots, 1200 bots, 12000 bots among that high number already logged in, then regular residents like myself would be prevented from logging in. And that makes me cross.

You are a bot owner? We are bound to always disagree on the right to use bots.

I also must tell you that I have been repeating since 2008 that I appreciate there are some useful bots on the grid. However, the ones stuck in skyboxes doing bugger all except cluttering up the grid for the purposes of making a sim look busy p1ss me off, for reason stated above.

  6. It is Murphy's law that the moment you go back to having a Basic account you'll need Support, and will be frustrated that it's just not available.

I'd recommend you keep the Premium account, but pay it quarterly rather than monthly, as you pay less per month that way.  I worked it out that, taking into consideration the 512m of land allowed with no tier fee to pay, so I have a "home" base as well as support (which I do take full advantage of), and the weekly stipend I am paid, I pay out only 58p a week (UK money). Less than the cost of a magazine, and worth it to me.

I bought a horse and went to rezz  it and i got the message missing from data base, how do I get my horse back??

Or WHO is giving me my damn money back?!?! *not happy at all*!

Welcome, Sammie, to the Second Life forums.

Is the horse in a box that you have to unpack?  If the horse definitely is not in the package, you must contact the seller and politely ask them to redeliver your item.  It might be that something has gone slightly wrong with their vendor, and you've been sent an empty package. These things happen sometimes, quite in error, and are easily rectified.

I have a premium account and my account is about to expire.  How do I extend it?

You can check when your next payment is due by going to your Dashboard within this Second Life website, and clicking on "account", "account summary".  While you are a Premium Member, you will be charged monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending what you selected when you first became a Premium Member.

Also, as Cinn states, you will get an email, about a week before your next payment is due to be taken, so you can ensure you have time to budget for it.

  9. Bryce, are you having problems on all sims, with the lag, and the greyed out avatars, etc?  It's just that, if you frequent the more busy sims (and the sim you mention on another one of your forum threads currently has 85 avatars there and no one can move!) this will be a more common problem unfortunately.

Some sim owners are taking steps to reduce lag by requesting visitors keep their scripts down to a minimum; removal of unnecessary HUDs, and scripts in footwear and hair can help a lot.

Or you're going to have to find more secluded beaches with less lag.

I'm not aware of doing anything wrong.  Didn't say or do anything malicious.  Also, I didn't receive anything by email or any other way explaining why the ban.  I'd like to understand why this happened, but if the authorities are silent about it I can't learn from the experience, since I'm not aware of doing anything wrong.  An explanation would be appreciated.

Are you sure you've been banned from there? You still have the group listed on your profile, and I am sure if you were banned, you would have been removed from the group.

However, if you are sure you have been banned, you can always send the beach owner a polite notecard asking them to explain what you did wrong. This does not mean you will necessarily get a response at all.

Luckily, there are a lot of similar places in Second Life, so you have a choice of other venues at which to bare all.

    :)

The SL sky has not fallen in yet.

Mesh continues to be tested, I believe. Mesh-specific forums can be found over here...

Keep your eye on Oskar Linden's weekly posts to see what new updates are being rolled out that are going to affect the whole grid

    Welcome back after your break.

    And have fun! :smileyhappy:

THESE MAY BE TOS VIOLATION QUESTION, but for each question, there are tool sold in SL that allows these actions against the TOS.  So, if SL allows these tools sold, then it must be allowed.

!. How to find out if a person has multiple avatars and the names, other than asking them?

    2. How do you find anyone anywhere (even out of range) without having their permission?  I know there are av finder gadgets, but what is the most effective one?

I have stalking tendencies too, BUT really and truly, why do you need to know this information? You don't.  Try and channel those stalking urges into something useful. That's my advice.

If you have found a product on marketplace or in world that you feel violates the Terms of Service, please do the responsible thing and report it. As Ishtara points out in her post, LL cannot police the entire grid, and do rely on us residents making them aware of violations.

If you want to give more information on why you might want to be able to suss out someone's alts, then I'm sure we will all gladly advise further.

  13. Welcome to the Second Life forums, ChristineAngel.

Please take notice of the majority of posters in this thread, and only ever buy your Linden dollars from Linden Labs themselves, or from one of the approved sellers.

Occasionally you might see someone advertising Linden dollars through this forum, other forums, other websites, in group chat. NEVER EVER BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE - they will be scammers.

    what Tateru said =)

(yes this post was just an excuse to say "Hi, don't usually see you outside of blog land")

I learn a lot from you, Void; you got me taking more notice of my script counts, and I've been spreading a script control HUD around to friends/folk who ask for it.

In RL I recycle !! *laughs* (feel like I can hear people muttering "bloody do-gooders and tree huggers")

If they're flagged as scripted agents, they don't generate any parcel traffic. That's actually what the flag is for - exempting an account from the traffic system. Some people set it even though they're not bots.

Thank you for clarifying - then I know for sure the bots I found most recently are traffic bots, judging by the ridiculously high traffic count on the parcel and only bots there.

  16.

You reminded me of how much I've loved the collaborations in the past. How marvellous it is to be part of a joint building project. A friend I used to share half a sim with used to say "I've built (castle/underground area/sky platform with snow theme/giant fish tank), now it's ready for you to decorate", and I'd go in and decorate, him in Germany, me in UK.  It was great to log in and see what he'd done, and then create surprises for him when he logged back in.

The sailing in SL is fab, as a passenger, but you'd never get me on a boat in RL. Same with parachute jumping, which I love in SL, it still makes my tummy flipover when I fall off a high building (I love when I get that amount of immersion).

And where else can you be in a bar/club, yet be in your pyjamas at the same time?

It really is an amazing game.
