Hi Felicity - Someone a couple posts up put it BETTER then the rest of the garbage in this thread. No one is going to care about your business more then yourself. I am growing a small business, and I am learning through trial and error. But I'm learning what is bringing me business and what isn't - and I'm being VERY picky how I spend my marketing budgets. RL or SL, doesn't matter, YOU are the heart of your small business and as a small business you are going to drain your small income by hiring someone to do the work for you, and by misusing paid for resources. But as the heart of that small business, you are the front line soldier in the trenches getting it done, day in and day out. Pay for what you think works, if it doesn't after a pre-determined test threshold, stop paying for it and shift your efforts somewhere else. Engage your community. People that spend money in SL do it because they care about the brands they wear, and the brands they wear make them apart of their community. Which is really the beating heart of SL's longevity. (What I mean by that, I'll use Vanilla Bae as a good example. That lady posts in her group almost every day to engage her community and just let them know she's there for them, and cares about her customers. That is good solid success and I think that brand reaps the rewards of it.) Use the larger successful outlets as a guide and model, learn what you can that applies to you. But dont copy them, they are big and successful because they have found something that works after probably a very long hard road of building their brand. And they hire people most likely because their needs require it and they have the budget for it. Market research. Market research. Market research. Where are people shopping at and how can you get in that (weekend sales is a great example someone else posted). There are some excellent interviews on youtube done by a few known content creators interviewing product designers. Its a great place to just hear their experience and gleam some knowledge. I can't comment on the ludicrous argument in this thread,. But Felicity ... just one step in front of the other while you climb the mountain. We say in the military, put on the vest and ruck sack, march one step at a time till you hit your goal. It sucks, but embrace the suck and get some. And you will become smarter, faster, leaner and find what works for your business, model and brand. The common theme that stands out to me in SL is longevity. Stick around, find a way to make it work, and you'll build brand recognition over time. SL is a small community, people will start seeing you the longer you are around. I hope that is helpful from someone in the same kind of situation. Marketing is my weak area. And I'm just putting it out there in the threads I think will get me some day in and day out visibility on my store and island of rentals. (Events, Classified, Flickr, SL Marketplace, testing some ad boards, word of mouth, shows and events.) I'm no expert. Just a soldier out on the line working on my own brand. Happy 2024!
