Actually, no, it isn't. If your land is indeed, as you claim, "on the Blake Sea", it is rental land by one of the Blake estate holdings (USS, Sailors Cove, SLNew England, Second Norway, Tug Harbor etc) and they all have agreed on not allowing their renters to pull up banlines or sec orbs, but to keep a reasonable amount of prims unused for naval traffic.

BTW, all land west of sims starting with Blake Sea in the names isn't Blake Sea! So everything west of the row of BS islands is regarded as Nautilus proper.

But at least now we know why the last 2 years has gotten steadily worse in the way of maintenence.

Huh? Pleeez, SL did improve leaps and bounds over the last 2 years. Who cares about social nonsense like failing group chat and stuff when the most important part of our world, sim crossings,  became so much better? When we got mesh? When new scripts made our lifes so much easier and less laggy? I don't know where you see any "steadily gotten worse". SL was bad in 07, 08, and in 09 it became a lot better, and since then it grows better and stronger ... slowly but steadily.

  3. Yes, you're right. I never claimed Linux users are better people by definition, but all in all we still have some sense for community and co-operative action. And you can't deny it's easier to find help with Linux problems than with closed-source softwares.

Well, I'm everyhing but a Linux buff. I'm comfortable on my system but that doesn't  make me a Linux guru like Jean. So although I'd have a good starter pack in mind for you *cough cough Mint17 Cinnamon *cough I'd never recommend it since I could be totally wrong. :smileyindifferent: I don't wanna be responsible for losing you from the list of possible Linux convertees.

Maybe just browse thru my bloggy thingy, I'm known for throwing in one or the other Linux story from time to time. :matte-motes-sunglasses-3:

    Grab 2000 US$

Woah, Jeanie, you think he needs 2k $$$ for a good SL machine? I haven't looked at Newegg.com yet since I'm not a Murkin but I guess for those specs you should get away with ~ 1,000 bucks. But oh okay, he needs a screen, keyboard and mouse as well. So let's make it 1200-1600. But that should really do it.

But sometimes I think the Linux crowd puts off many folks with constant talk about distros and other things.  Most of us just want to turn on our computers and go.  I didn't use the word "steep" to describe the learning curve but they make it sound that way.  And I've already got 101 other things to do so it becomes one more on my list.

Perrie, I can understand the need "to turn on our computers and go", but in what computing world did you ever had that experience? In Windows? Nooo! The fact that we're all so cool in Windows and Mac OS environments is based on 25 years of muscle memory integrated into our physical bodies. Newsflash: Linux ain't Windoze, even if you can make it look and act like Win or Apple. The whole architecture of the software is completely different *cough better *cough. So of course there is a however shaped learning curve involved when you're a n00b to Linux.

Of course you can just download a distro, install it, switch on your machine and go, that's how I and basically every Linux n00bie did it. And the experience can even be good to perfect, depending on some personal factors such as frustration tolerance level, IQ, ability to laugh about oneself, general geekyness, interest and so on.

That we talk so much about distributons is simply based on the fact that there are sooo fuxxing many of 'em available. You know the quasi religious wars fought between Windoze and Apple fanbois; now imagine how that would end with 100 Windowses versus 100 Apples
    :(
See, we have 200 Linux distros but Linux users are far more tolerant than  the other 2 varieties. If it's about helping a new Linux user we all work together instead of against each other.

I can see  you are not up to date

Oh LOL, dd  I can assure you that Jeanie is one of the very few absolute Linux experts in SL. But that's not the only point in which you err:

    - Chromebooks aren't very capable computers

    - Intel onboard graphics are still far behind AMD APUs and won't give you much joy in the long run

    - Nvidia 650 isn't anything what I'd call good ... or even acceptable. SL isn't a chatroom, we want and need eyecandy and high framerate

    - for absolute n00bs on Linux there is a whole bunch of better suited distributions available than Ubuntu. For a computing lightweight such as the Acer C-720 (even if it's the best chromebook on the market right now) you can even find something better in the *buntu family. Lubuntu for example. And when going the *buntu way, why don't you use the deLuxe version and switch to Mint? Also available in all kinds of desktop flavours ... except that terrible Unity :)

  8. It's almost like as if this computer suddenly up and one day said, "NOPE. DON'T LIKE IT. STOP USING IT." It still loads up and lets me log-in, but it moves incredibly slow and constantly freezes up.

Mhm, zacly. Could it be hardware problems maybe? I mean your brave computer is a real grandpa now, an old fighter with probably more battlescars than you can count. 2006 you say? That's jurassic park age, even older than stone age.

    Here's what I'd do:

    1) take it apart, blow it out with compressed air and brush with a very soft brush. Then format your HD and reinstall XP. Sometimes a little freshener like that helps wonders.

Oh, XP's lifecycle is over, M$ stopped the support, so it'll soon be a virus party. And since your old machine probably can't handle any newer OSes please read my 2nd suggestion ...

    2) you had time since 2006 to save up on a new computer, so do it now. Purchase all new hardware. Computers are much cheaper nowadays so you get even much more and better stuff for the same amount of money. Also this would give you the chance to use your old machine as a Linux testbed and/or a home server. Cool eh?

  9. Welcome to SL, Sara.

No, most people don't RP. Well, as one of theother said already aren't we all playing a role, in both lifes? I don't know about them but I know I don't. In SL I'm the same as in RL only younger  (not even half my RL age), aggressive lesbian socialist, kinda rich, spoilt, bratty loudmouth and some say I'm even kindasorta sexy. So yeah, exactly how I'd love to be in RL.

    Is that roleplay?

Oh, and I gotta say SL is not a chatroom at all. At least not for me. My time in SL is too valuable to waste it away with chatting. The stuff I have to say I say in forums and on my blog; in world I set most groups so that I don't get any notices/IMs from them.

  10. Yes Mirbaz, it's exactly for that: giving you higher quality. Of course your hardware and your connection must be able to show you the eyecandy. On a 300 $/€ laptop it won't help you. If it even let's you put the sliders that far up. Stick to the recomended setttings as automagicallly given to you by LL, else you'll suffer slow framerates and the danger of overheating and frying your poor little lappy.

Your question "What is this for if most people just stick to high" makes no sense when you are not most people. Some millions of us are "real" SLers and "gamers" who take their **bleep** seriously. We always buy the latest hardware, we don't bother with tablets and cellphones and other nonsense but we believe in the right tool for the job. Because we enjoy crisp, high quality graphics, we love to see shadows, we experiment with DOF, we need the quality for making photos or machinima or just because the second life is so much nicer on ultra. Also when I purchase a new skin or a relly good dress I wanna see in all detail why I paid so much. :matte-motes-sunglasses-3:

  11. You say "when a sim has no spare time ...". Hm, that can't be the reason in my case since the whole fleet seems to have no problems running all the scripts. Only little Orcsi fails. :smileysad: Just a couple days ago it happened in a very unfortunate moment: Orca was leading the pack (ya, she's not a bad racer) and reaches the last marker. From there on it's all downwind into the finish. So gesture: +55, spin up and swoosh, yay another win .... Only it didn't happen, Orca was like glued to the spot and watched helplessly as all the other passed her on speed. :smileymad:

Anyhoo I guess it must be my connection. ISP gave me a test account, I did some speed tests local and international and also a traceroute. Looked pretty normal but in world everything goes a bit better now. Not 100% tho, but getting there.

    Thx for your help

  12. @ Perrie: thanks, good to know. I thought it meant scripts are taking 100% of the time, leaving no time for other stuff to run.

@ Arton: no, I guess not. I took extra care not to have any F-keys assigned to any of my "party gestures". And when I'm sailing I deactive them anyway and only have one set of racing gestures activated. It always worked great until ~3 mths ago.

So, what can it be? Connection maybe?

  13. Aloha,

since 2 - 3 mth I have a problem with sailing in SL. My gestures (used for trimming the sails) often don't work. I gotta hit the corresponding F-key repeatedly until something happens. But my stats are quite ok, I don't suffer any lag or anything out of the ordinary. It's just that my boats won't accept gestures anymore. I tested my connection (all ok), re-installed Linux and Singularity fresh, my PC is clean and healthy.

So wtf is causing my gestures to not work? Yesterday I found on closer inspection that "Scripts Run" in stats window (ctrl-shift-1) is almost always on 100%, never lower than 99.6%. Can that be the cause of the problem? And how do I get rid of it/fix it??? In the example photo I just took, I'm in an almost empty and unlaggy Premium sandbox and have nothing on myself but an AO and the Pharrel Happy Dance. So I guess it can't be my avi.

Oh, and I also tested Firestorm viewer ... same problem there.:smileysad:

    happy_002.jpg

100% scripts run??? OMG!!! Help please ... HELP!!!

  14. 1) Inventar von acc zu acc uebertragen geht natuerlich nur mit trans perms. Logo.

    2) Wie du schon sagtest, es geht dir nur um "links"??? Was das denn bitteschøn?

  15. Heyyy, that old lappy of yours isn't too shabby, not at all. Many SL residents would kill for something like that. And what you mean you "tried" downloading the latest driver? Either you do or you don't, there is no try.

I'm not a huge fan of AMD but it shouldn't be a problem locating your gpu model on their website, download the driver and install it.

Well, be that as it may, I hope your new lappy is a powerhouse and keeps you happy for the next couple of years.

  16. Pssht Kyrah, don't let the many (many many) antisocial trolls hear your ideas. I once made the mistake of entering into such an dispute with them about banlines and sec orbs, like a year ago, and still licking my wounds. Those people aren't serious, they don't regard themself as part of the problem and they are not interested in a solution. They just wanna sit in their castles and make airplanes go p00f. They only have one goal: making SL a miserable place!

I hadn't realized that a quick snapshot was going to cause anyone to judge the type of hardware I was using

I have my graphics turned down because I was told to. Since I use windlight settings someone said I don't need anything higher.

Well, you posted the link to the snapshot so we could try and analyze what's wrong, didn't you? The jagged outlines and missing atmo shaders are a dead giveaway for intentionally bad graphics setttings (why would anybody do that?) or weakish hardware (more porobable).

The second statement doesn't make any sense at all. Why do you turn your graphics down just because you use windlight settings? We all are on windlight since 2009, in fact you can't be NOT on WL, and that never stopped anyone from trying to achieve the best possible visuals.

  18. So I Im him and ask him to watch where he is going.

Why you do such a stupid thing? IM is the worst way to communicate, isn't it? It's always so secretive and like "hey, I'm ashamed to talk in public". While IM box is open you can't move or do anything and it takes up screen space. I always get angry when ppl IMing me eventhough they stand right next to me.

Ok, reagrding your question: yes, for some undiscernible reason sharing of IMs is against TOS. And the sim owner was perfectly in her right when she banned you. First she don't need no reason at all, secondly you started drama in her sim.

  19. No worries there, Sunnygirl. It's not the top, it's just that SL doesn't agree with your hardware. From the low quality of your photo I assume you're on some cheapo laptop without much of graphics power. For the beginning try to solve the problem by carefully cleaning out your laptop (or desktop in case my asssumption was wrong). Get rid of all the the dustbunnies and dirt inside the case and see  if that helps. It's recommended procedure every 6 mths (3 if you're a smoker). Best use a soft soft supersoft brush and a can of compressed air for the task. Oh, and a micro screwdriver for opening up the maintenance panels of the lappy. But in the long run only a more powerful machine with a decent dedicated graphics card will help you.
