Pop em in the Library maybe? Do the Horizons pack too while you're at it?

Perhaps at some point, but that is an involved process the Lindens have to do. Using the server allows us to update or add content ourselves much more easily and quickly.

I didn't want to start another thread so putting his here.

Calling @Abnor Mole with a question that hopefully can be answered easily.

I had a friend contact me just now wanting me to send her the texture pack from the Linden Traditional Homes.   I said I wasn't sure if that was the plan and that only the folks owning the houses could get the house textures, etc.

So my question is, are the house textures just for the home owners are are they for all SL citizens?  Long ago some similar textures were given out to anyone who wanted them.   But this current method seem more structured.

    Thanks for any input.

The House Controller (mailbox/lifebuoy) only gives them to the owner of the home. This prevents spamming and flooding the content pack server with delivery requests. But the textures themselves are fully permissive, so any resident who has them can share them with anyone they wish.

P.S. I kinda misworded things a bit. I said 'special ppl', which may have suggested I was thinking you were playing favorites. Honestly, I'm not that paranoid. :) But it would have been better if I had said 'special occasion' or something (as in a limited edition of these homes), that only the first run of ppl was able to get and/or only a limited number thereafter.

I knew what you meant. And no, there are no special people. Anyone with a premium account and enough available tier can get a Linden Home*

Loved everything about your post! This one made me frown a bit, though. I mean, they are going to be 'handed out to everyone like cheap earbuds on a flight to Albuquerque', right?! I hope you're not saying only 'special' ppl will get them (unless 'special' eventually includes all Premium members). I don't mind waiting, honestly, as long as the intention at Linden Labs is still to provide these to all Premium members.

No, that isn't what I meant at all. Only that in order to instantly create enough to be able to give them out to every possible potential customer the end result will be a vastly inferior product (like the aforementioned throw away worthless headphones airlines give out). We have every intention to keep making Linden Homes for as long as there is a demand.

  5. (if anyone wants to try this exercise themselves, rez a 4m square block with .5m cubes representing houses and snap all the pieces to a .0625m grid)

The main parcel has to support the LI of the houses and parcels do not touch. So the maximum number of parcels you can have is 36. Here is a picture of that that looks like:

    cb1123f82bbc88a62fd64a47988679a2.thumb.jpg.5a2696aeaab8d77f15cc7ff15f4b3b4a.jpg

Pretty exciting, isn't it? With this you will not have LI for any sort of roads or trees and no real space for them either... or any beaches, lagoons, mountains, views or anything really. The houses will just be an endless grid of parcels. It won't be worth exploring so it probably doesn't really need roads or paths anyway. BUT since there isn't a way to add any sort of variety and you have to make hundreds of them overnight they can all be clones of the same template. All the regions will be the same... flat with no content other than the houses. But everyone who could possible have one can have one right away. How many people do you think that would be though? Do you think they'd like it? Would they fill all 60,000 parcels? Or would they be empty wastelands of little empty houses all crammed next to each other with only an handful actually occupied in each region because they look at it and go "eww..."?

Or... you take away about a third of those parcels. Here is what that looks like:

    ec60628ee50a14bc3ec7707c9569143e.thumb.jpg.718d606ffb48dc70f821c86dc18f5c73.jpg

Now you can vary it up a bit. Use that LI for some decoration content. Maybe even put the parcels in different configurations. But now you have to make even MORE regions. Now if you only have 10 or 12 or even 20 templates... even if you randomize them once you get a few hundred of them stitched together it becomes pretty obvious they are just clones. Not much of anything special about that. Not really a place to play and explore since they are basically all the same. It'll still be a big grid of regions that are all homogeneous. However, you could clone the snot out of them and make enough for all 60,000 potential premium residents. But again, do you think all 60,000 potential residents would actually want one or would the reaction be pretty much the same (namely "ewww...")? Probably.

Or... we accept the idea that mass cloning of Linden Homes is a major factor in ruining their appeal to most. It makes them just a place to park some bots or wall yourself in because there is nothing outside of your window worth looking at anyway or going out your door to experience. Now that means creating these regions is much more time consuming because you have to make them individually and they can't possibly all be ready at once. But it does mean they will be much more desirable and valued once they are. And a large part of that value is in the fact they aren't just handed out to everyone like cheap earbuds on a flight to Albuquerque.

So which sounds like a better plan...

1700 regions of parcels that probably nobody will really want and will probably just claim because they can and never do much of anything with it.

2500 regions with parcels not many people will actually enjoy any more than the old Linden Homes and again, will probably just claim one because they can.

Or a few hundred regions (to start) with parcels people a LOT of people absolutely love and are banging on the doors to get into... with plans to have it grow and evolve as it grows. With so much interest to the point people are actually forming a cohesive community around them that includes people who don't even have a home there yet. The operative word there being yet.

We're making home baked small batch cookies from scratch that a great number of people are telling us they think are simply to die for. We're making more and we're gonna keep making more as long as people keep wanting them. We could make enough for everyone at once, but we'd essentially be handing cookies out from a big bag of Chips Ahoy! And is that what anyone really wants if they think about it?

If you only have the doors locked, someone can get in by just sitting on something inside the house, TPing in, etc.

A wise friend once told me "Locks are there to keep honest people honest." Locked doors just let people know you don't want visitors. They don't really do much to "secure" any home in SL. If they want to get inside anyway they will.  That is why you have the ability to eject and ban any person from your land who chooses to ignore that or doesn't get the hint. You also have the security orb in the content pack you can use. Once it is set up they will be ejected if they don't leave.

  7. We use the same tools you do. We have no special abilities, no god powers, no secret upload portal that lets us give a mesh with a million triangles 1LI... To my knowledge the only thing we do have is our objects are immune to being returned for encroachment, which was done so the mainland roads that have an edge crossing a parcel somewhere deep underground wouldn't suddenly disappear overnight. We leverage that one special ability for Linden Homes so the house cannot be returned by the parcel owner.

  9. Even if it could be, having it as a separate item rather than incorporating it into every single house is a savings in script resources. Based on what I've seen so far only a handful of residents in most regions are actually feeling the need to use any sort of security system at present.

  10. Thoughtless people are a fact of life. In my real life the house next door to me has been rented to what appear to be college age kids who think nothing of setting up a sound system on their postage stamp back yard and playing really bad "music" loud enough so everyone in the neighborhood can hear it inside their homes with the windows closed.

Inconsiderate neighbors are nothing new. You can't control their behavior, only your reaction to it. We tried to create a covenant that address the most common and irksome things and guide people into thinking about the perception of those around them before they act (or rez). Some things (like what other people are doing behind closed doors) are nobody's business. Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourself if you are actively looking for things to be irritated by. In those cases minding your own business and letting it go are the best choices. Sometimes a person is deliberately attempting to prevoke a response. For those people, deny them the satisfaction of giving them one. And sometimes people just don't know or don't realize what they are doing. When that happens a simple "Hey, could you not do that? Thanks" is usually all it takes.

And most of the time the hardest part of all this is figuring out which of those cases you are dealing with and responding appropriately.

It's a bit difficult, though, to imagine a context in which a naked pony-girl, even without sex attachments, pulling her master in a pony-cart wouldn't be considered sexual anywhere in the world (other, as I understand it, than in some branches of Walmart, where it's probably an everyday occurance).

Having said that, I'm not sure how much use it is to AR the people involved, unless they make a habit of it.    It's annoying and thoughtless of the people concerned, but LL really do have more important things to worry about.

That's just the thing. We don't know the context. We weren't there. We are hearing someone's description and interpretation of what they saw. I didn't suggest it wasn't, but I'm not assuming it was either. I'm merely suggesting everyone review what the Lab considers adult content or behavior before filing a report based on what they assume is adult content or behavior. Include screenshots, be clear and succinct, stick the the facts and what the lab can prove and verify. That's simply good practice for any abuse report no matter what the subject.

  13. I encourage everyone to read and understand the rules on Adult Content before they file an Abuse Report. One of the most misinterpreted tenets is the assumption that nudity is always sexual and therefor adult content. While this may be true culturally in some parts of the world, in this virtual world that is not necessarily true. If something is questionable by all means file an abuse report. Temper that with the understanding that if the system is flooded with reports for things that are in fact not violations of the TOS or maturity ratings, the reports that actually are violations will take longer to be addressed by the Lindens. Knowing and understanding what Linden Lab does or does not consider an actionable offense before filing a report will make the process more efficient for them and insure a faster response.

Given that the unit will operate under 100m from ground level, or over 2000m, and has a detect range of up to 400m it sounds like the clear flight corridor is above 500m and below 1600m.

Is that correct? 500m is quite high which could detract from the enjoyment of Belliseria from the air.

Even if you put it 100m in the air with a range of 400m, it still only works to 400m above sea level. The warnings are in a chat message and not a popup. As long as you don't stop over a parcel for more than a few seconds, you shouldn't notice anything but the occasional chat message warning (which can be easily ignored).

You know, this thread may have been opened for this reason or that, but I'm honestly curious how many users the first rollout did seat. How many homes + houseboats were in it? It's good trivia if nothing else.

I know how many there are exactly. ;)

Tell you what... just for fun, whoever can give me the correct answer first wins a prize 😁

  16. To  be fair, there is probably should to be a short grace period so people can get used to the new rules and try out the new orb.

If you find someone with an improperly set security orb the first thing you should probably do is kindly send them a link to this forum thread. They may just not know and don't realize what they are doing isn't going to be allowed anymore. If enough of their nice friendly neighbors nudge them in that direction they might even say thank you. ;)

If they just seem to ignore everyone, then yes... send an abuse report and their improperly set orb will be returned to them (which should get their attention).

Never assume malice when stupidity will suffice.
Never assume stupidity when ignorance will suffice.
Never assume ignorance when forgivable error will suffice.
Never assume error when information you hadn't adequately accounted for will suffice.
Therefore, never assume malice when information you hadn't adequately accounted for will suffice.

The amount of time needed really depends on the method of travel and the size of the parcel. It gets more complicated on the mainland as a whole. In that setting, we'd have to either (1) have a sliding scale of some sort depending on probably parcel size or (2) come up with a one size fits all number recognizing that it might be too much/too little for some circumstances.

I imagine some enterprising scripter could probably make an orb that automatically adjusted it's minimum warning time based on the size of the parcel it was on .

Is this why all of a sudden the people on my house access list can no longer open doors or access the house menu? I have NOT set up the new security system. My friend who is on my house access list and helped decorate my houseboat in Hibiki was offline for a couple of hours, has just returned to find herself locked out of the house. Doors won't open and menu won't respong. I repeat, I've not set up the new security system and haven't touched anything. She's relogged. I've taken her name off the list and put it back on. Nothing, locked out. Tried Live Chat and they sent me the post Constantine Linden put up telling us ban lines were being banned.

That isn't part of the security system. We recently updated the houses to resolve an issue with avatars with the last name ".resident" not being recognized by the system. You may just need to add them again to the list.

400m altitude? You can't even see the ground from there.

True, but even if everyone uses it at its maximum setting you get chat messages instead of pop ups. So if you keep moving and don't stop over someone's parcel who has it running you can generally ignore the warnings and go about your business.

Patch, does this mean that a anyone entering the monitored area gets a warning instantly and then gets ejected if they have not passed through within 15 seconds (or as set)?

That might mean that people see a lot of pop up messages as they fly through.. most nice trips are lower than 400m to see the view as you travel along nd at dea level its easy to clip the outer edges of houseboat dock areas.

I hoped that the security system might have a delay before activating the warning... say a minimum of 10 seconds, then a short delay before the kick off... say minimum 5 seconds... so same minimum limit of 15 seconds but avoiding lots of pop up from anyone flying over in under 10 seconds.

Maybe in version 2 if that is not already the process.  I will test with a second avatar to see how it currently works later today. Thanks.

Our system does not give popups. It warns you in a chat message.

So if anyone who scripts out there would like to make a device like this and put it for sale ..... I'd certainly be in line to buy it as I'm sure others would find it valuable as well.

Dyna is pondering adding that functionality to the security system in an update.
