  1. if the G & M content is kept secret from non users and teens, they are not going to see SL as a way to obtain it. teens are going to create a teen account and the existence of other sims would still be hidden.

if theres is not an option for teens to have a teen account, that is restricted to G sims, they are going to get an Adult account, with possibilities to go to places inappropriate for them.

thats why i think is better to have non users unaware of the M & A sims, no not give a bad image of SL to some adults, and to not tempt teens that want a place to do what they shouldn't.

  2. not all adults want to be in M & A rated sims either, because they are not interested in places that challenge their values, not all adults would like to be in a place where potentially cursing, provocative dressing and possible nudity is allowed, they want a safe and clean environment, so there may be adults that would never go to A or M rated sims.

since Linden Lab wants to cater to different types of cultures and mindsets, it should showcase in the Destinatiion Guide only G rated sims, unless the viewer becomes a user and select that s/he is comfortable being exposed to other types of content, that G & M, or G, M & A, should be visible in the Destination Guide.

the knowledge of the M & A places should be hidden to everyone, if you don't know they exist, you don't feel that you are missing something, like we dont feel that second life is too small and restricted if we dont know that there are sims rated X.

teens can be interested in SL, that is the reason why teens by their own decision lied about their age and got into the main sims, because they are curious, and if they see a game online they want to play it, they think its gonna be fun. some have fun in SL chatting with friends, exploring what it is around, and once they know how to build, they like to do things, they are human like us, they have the same curiosity for exploring, creating, socializing.

  3. altought Second Life is very flexible in terms of possibilities, we are limited by the tools we have available to create something original.

for example the system avatar has a constrain of how many sliders you can move and how much you can move them, a sim has a constrain of how many prims you can use, how high you can go.

mesh has a constrain of how much detail you can use.

we have to create the most original things we can between those boundaries.

in terms of user imagination, not many are interested in originality, some would like to recreate a scene that already exist in rl, some would like to represent another reality by making it slightly different from rl, such as floating islands, or cyborg extremities, the people that adventure into something completely original are usually artists, or engineers, that want to go beyond anything that resembles any experience that thay may had in rl.

most people are comfortable with something they already are familiar with. why going thru the hassle to learn something from scratch when the things they already know work perfectly well?

  4. those issues were already thought by Linden Lab and the solutions were applied.

13 year olds are allowed in SL in sims owned by organizations, such as educational, that allow them to have an account.

Linden Lab lift the rule of only letting adults in the main grid and now 16-18 are allowed to roam in places rated G.

teens are welcome to Second Life by Linden Lab.

Linden Lab censored adult content, separate it from the rest of the grid by creating Zindra, a red-light-district. the other places that have adult content were forced to be rated Adult, blocking it from teens access.

the teens are allowed to mix with adults in G rated areas, like an MMO.

all your ideas have been applied.

  5. because their reasoning is based on prejuidice, so they discriminate. some become too lazy to know if a person may be a threat or not, so they categorize them in a group and discrminate them unjustly. like people that discrminate based on race or nationality. they make some suppositions in their imaginations that don't fit all people who belong to certain characteristic, apply them to all, and they evade the effort of reasoning by just discrminating a big part of humanity.

you and your friend are not on the wrong side of things.

  6. we do need more than 42 groups, because there may be more than 42 interesting groups in Second Life.

a group is supposed to be a name on the server that has a list of users that belong to it, when someone send a message it has to appear in the interface of all the users that are subscribed to it, the appearing of the message in all those accounts seems to be too much effort by the server, so to discourage groups with too many subscribers they decide to force people to choose only their essential groups they may want to join, hopefully not many will choose the same group.

they need to fix the way messages are displayed, by giving acces to a view of a flow of messages to just the subscribers, instead of making the process to deliver a message to each subscriber for every comment that is written, repeating the process over and over, they can do so by having a notecard that will add the new messages and refreshing the view of the group chat window with the updated notecard.

  7. things have improved, some years into the past the unscheduled maintenace was more frequent.

i agree that second life is still in a stage that dont provide the results expected to all the users, like all functions working correctly all of the time, hopefully, the imperfections will be reduced gradually as the Lindens find a way to stabilize more what they currently have when they add new code.

  8. i'll follow your train of thought, theorically "if god created us", would that neccesarly mean that we would know what created it? no, unless we somehow find out, or its reveled to us in case that that god knows what create it.

if we created god, and god created us, it would be a simultaneous creation, therefore it would be two forces working together to deliver separate entities, now, we have to define what we mean by the word "us", all lifeforms? humanity? the universe? the regular posters of the Second Life Official forum General Discussion? you and me?

we have to be very specific in order to have correct answers.

  9. in order to make mesh avatars work as good as system avatars they need to grant mesh permission to use the features like alpha, clothing layers, sliders, only then they can get rid of the original avatar.

if they grant those permissions they would not only be winning in getting rid of the old avatar, it will also help creators eliminating the need to use appliers.

if they intent to keep the old avatar because it takes advantage of all those features, but is not presentable enough to keep retention, then they should make it presentable, it is proven that it can be done, it works with the bone structure, it may have more triangles and by consequence cause more lag, but that doesnt seem to be of concern by Linden Lab, since this is the welcome experience that they decide to give to new users, if that is not a concern, then it shouldn't be a problem to add more triangles to the old avatar. what they would win is a presentable avatar that would take advantage of all the features.

  10. if they are not interested to do it, they should hire mesh creators to make a model to replace the default avatar that works as seamless as possible with the current bone structure, and inherit the texture features of the default avatar, for that to happen, they should give some specifications such as bytes size, number of max triangles, name and extension of the file, format, and everything else to make the new shape compatible with their current system.

  11. I understand that the purpose of releasing better shaped avatars is to give new users a better impresion and give them a better image to present themselves.

wouldnt fixing the default avatar accomplish that?

if Linden Lab had the time and skills to create from scratch a more detailed model, they dont have the time and skills to improve the default avatar?

making the default avatar as good as these mesh models would had taken advantage of the sliders, the alpha layers, the physics layer, the clothes layers, and everything that has been done for the avatars thru the existance of SL. all of that would have been inherited and have would keep the spirit of user customization that Second Life stands for, but they decided to cover up the lack of skills and time they have to refine the default avatar, with a more refined avatar that they created themselves.

refining the default avatar would not break any content, it would make all avatars look good, maybe some mesh creators would get affected, like the ones who make mesh hands or feet, but those creators started making them as an effort to provide a solution that Linden Lab refused to do for years. the community had to make the solutions themselves, seeing that waiting years for Linden Lab to fix those problems was hopeless, if Linden Lab finally improved the default avatar, creators should be happy that the frustration that lead them to improve by themselves the avatars is now being taken into account by Linden Lab.

it seems Linden Lab watch close how creators were making parts of avatars to improve the default avatar because the default avatar was a mess, and they decided to do the same, instead of taking the hint of fixing it, they cover it too.

i dont know why is impossible to move a triangle of the default avatar shape, and totally possible to move a triangle of another shape, they can, can't they?

  12. maybe your looking for something like this:

you have to look broader about people dealing with loss of their investment, effort, and benefits that they obtain from a certain place, some users dont care at all if they are banned, like griefers, they just make another account and the ban dont affect them at all, while people that have other interests may feel more impact if suddenly their efforts get reduced to nothing. maybe you would like to investigate people that have lost their rl jobs, or lost some money out of an investment.

the reaction may be from "i dont care at all" to "i lost the investment of my lifetime".

  13. nice way to treat the ones that support you.

a ban for no reason, since you welcome child avatars, and an AR for no reason, because the avatar was not breaking any TOS rule.

just because that person, that even went as far as offering to change itself to please you, had a friendly conversation with you.

i dont know what do you call that, "great service", "welcoming place", politeness, let me tell you that that attitude really ruins what you want your sim to be.

so what if a person wants to be whatever s/he likes, a furry, a tiny, a child, another race, a vehicle, as long as they dont break your rules? since you say you welcome child avatars.

you blew it, that person didnt do anything to be punished, its just sad when sim owners just ban people that agree with their rules and decide to support the sim, just because the owners like the rush of a power trip.
thats why many sims dont make it.

  14. you may be expecting better treatment if you pay a lot of money for an account, lets say access to special areas that are more regulated, where politeness is required, or at least rudeness and swearing are not allowed, but unfortunately Linden Lab cannot control the actions of the users, a user that decides to swear may do it without filtering from the viewer and people around will read it or hear it, what Linden Lab could do is to ban that user from the area, but since it may be an area for paying users, that rude user would have to be granted access again.

since you pay for a premium membership, you can make that area for yourself, where you are in control in your premium house, you can have people visit and if they swear you can ban them, or only invite people in that dont swear or are not rude, there is the advantage that Linden Lab gives to paying users to protect themselves from rude people.

  15. it it works under the system that Rex Cronon is using, why block it just because its old?

maybe is too much of a job for the Lindens to test the new releases in a wide variety of operating systems and configurations, so they minimize that job by testing only with the latest lunix, windows and Mac OS, probably with the new releases things are not gonna work well on untested operating systems, thats a risk that the user would have to deal with it, but why block it for the users if it works, just to minimize their work load? they should let the user get the risk, and if something is a showstoper they should let the user decide if they are willing to live with the problem, or when they have decide or have the resources to do it, upgrade.

it remembers me when mesh came, people were blocked because they didnt have SSE2 capable processors, their viewers were still able to log in, they just didnt see mesh correctly, and some users were willing to live with it while they took the time to save money or travel to a place where computers were sold to upgrade their computers, with the blocking, based on the "shared experience", merchants and people that had jobs and other important things in-world, they just had to give up SL and wait for when the time comes when they are able to upgrade.

blocking a product that works, as much as the user is willing to stand, provides a lot of disadvantages to the user.

  16. we will have a lot of people using xp and mac osx 10.6 asking questions here why something doesnt work.

hopefully third party viewers will keep compatibility with those systems. if the viewer works well under those systems, not at its absolute optimized state, but well, third party viewers should be able to continue providing support using the older code for people that for some reason cannot upgrade.
