  1. This is part of the big Summer Sailstice sailing event that happened June 24; this exhibition goes to July 7. There are three artists. One has RL photos, one from virtual worlds, and the third creates images with AI. There's some really beautiful pieces! Lots of info and LMs are here: https://sailing.sl/?page_id=141
  2. Remember, although we may be in SL as we listen and dance, the music is not coming thru SL at all. You're given the source server when your viewer asks you for permission. I am NOT a lawyer, but I think those streaming services are the responsible parties, not SL. (The Motown sim is different and unique, so far.)
  3. Go to the source of all knowledge: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit-style_pizza
  4. Although I don't think I ever had a square pizza in Detroit until Little Ceasars started making them much later. Sounds like the idea spread! (You get a lot more pizza in the same size box.)
  5. Just to be clear: the "homage" had nothing to do with SL20B; the Hitsville USA (original Motown studio) reproduction/museum is the Detroit City! sim that's been around for 10 years. The "remove the objects" letter happened the day (or day after) the Motown sim opened.
  6. By the way, assuming for the moment that this build did have to happen in a hurry and that it's not cast in stone, I'd be happy to help if I can. I'm NOT a builder but I can do research, find photos, adapt them to textures, and in general help make that entry portal say "Welcome to Motown! " (Not just the label, the CITY.) For free of course, it would be a pleasure and an honor. (And I'm sure I'm not alone.)
  7. Hi Quartz! Yes, I understand. But LL decided that's OK, a tradeoff to get the whole contract with Styngr. I just think that's really unfortunate.
  8. Yes, L$1250 in the Motown Store, but ONLY if you're in the US or Canada (it says on the vendors but not on the signs out in the parking lot.)
  9. To be clear, I'm a HUGE fan of Linden Labs and SL! This whole thread is about this project being the best it can be!
  10. I went to Google Maps and typed GREEKTOWN. Looked at the street view. I could have grabbed an existing sign but decided to make one up, naming it after Greektown's main street. (With more time I'd email or call and ask them, but this was just a lark.) Seriously, the entire process took under a half hour from the first idea to the post.
  12. I opened my museum in the Ayuda Virtual community gateway region quite a while back, but just thought of doing a post here. The museum gives a very brief introduction to these two incredible Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya of southeastern Mexico and northern Central America, and the Inca of what are now Peru, Chile and Ecuador. Click the sign a the entry for a bilingual self-guided tour notecard and step thru the door of a traditional Maya house (these exist even today). More info and LM is here! https://secondlife.com/destination/museum-of-the-maya-inca-civilizations
  13. Jay, I was thinking about that. It MIGHT (and I really don't know) be fine, because music in SL actually doesn't come thru SL. When you go to a club, you have to click the button to allow the music stream to come in from an outside server -- it never actually comes thru SL at all. Those streaming services have their own rules, licenses, restrictions, permissions, etc.. Does this sound right to folks?
  14. Persephone, for 10 years there has been a beautiful reproduction of the HITSVILLE USA house, the original studio on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit where Motown began. There was a Marvin Gaye museum next door. I'm using the past tense because the day the Motown sim opened, the owner received a letter requiring nearly everything in those houses to be removed due to licensing restrictions.
  15. Sorry about that, and I hope I'm doing it right this time. Meanwhile, here's an example of what someone might have done instead the GENERIC PIZZA sign. That took about 15 minutes.
  16. I found nothing Detroit there at all. They found some rundown-looking industrial buildings and plunked them down. Several buildings are duplicated--hardware store and pizzeria at least. Would NOT have been hard to put some Greektown and Coney Dog signs on storefronts. The iconic Eastern Market entrance? Diego Rivera mural? I'm very sad.
  17. And I wish there was ANYTHING "Detroit" on the sim. I'm a native, so I'm sad.
  18. It's awful. First time I've ever encountered anything "country specific" in SL. I'm not in one of those selected countries so the whole sim is dead silence, I can't test the huds they sell in the store, and the YouTube screen is blocked.
  19. I was really excited when I read about this. I'm from Detroit, I saw the Motown building every day during high school. Imagine my total disappointment when I arrived! Multiple reasons (and I keep finding more as I go back hoping for better: --None of the media works "due to licensing" outside of selected countries. I'm in Mexico, so it is dead silence and the big YouTube screen is black. (It's not my settings.) I realize the vast majority of avs are in the USA and Europe, but SL has never played favorites. On the SL Website page that mentions the Motown Club it even says "meet friends from around the world." Well, except Latin America and probably Asia and Africa. --There's a L$1250 gadget sold in the "Motown Store" that is only available if you're I'm the US or Canada; I can't even try it out so have no idea what it does. --There is NOTHING Detroit about the sim. It would not have been so hard to find a few current or historic iconic buildings or structures. (A return visit found signage repeated on different blocks! This is a no-frills budget build; my city deserves better. --The company that LL is working with is all about monetizing music in online games. Does this mean SL DJs are going to be blocked from using Motown music? Are images or tributes of Motown artists going to be banned? Diana Ross graduated from my high school; I guess I feel like she's more than a monetizable asset. I'm sorry for the rant, but I REALLY feel let down. After 14+ years in SL I feel maybe I have some street cred, so maybe this post will let someone in power realize some shortcomings that only a Detroit native living outside the country would know.
  20. I'm looking for anyone willing to share a short (<10 seconds) clip of walking the track at any year's Relay For Life in Second Life. The clips are for a new music video of the Relay For Life Song and I hope it will be used for years. Nobody--videographers, musicians, performers or Me--is making a Linden off of this, so if you send me a video it's gotta be for free. This project has clearance from the ACS and RFL in SL. If you can help, please message me here or inworld. Thanks!
  21. I hope you'll all excuse a self-plug, but I recently passed a milestone of producing and posting FIFTY SL live music videos! They all appear on my YouTube channel, with some on Flickr and many on the Toggle for Music Website. It started when, just for fun, I did some recording at the great Saxapalooza event in October 2021--I realized how much I enjoyed it and just kept going! I'm very pleased to say that some of the performers and venues have linked them to their own Web and social media pages, and viewership is always rising (especially on Flickr which has a very engaged user base). I hope you'll take a look sometime! There are truly some fantastic musicians performing in SL, making all of our lives richer! Dana Enyo ¡EnYO! Shops
  22. Thank you Coffee, you're right. But can't we make our voices heard on this? I'm pleased to say my comment on this was accepted and posted in the online NYT; their editors do read this stuff.
