ok it is interesting though one can keep submitting different names vs only 3 as your one and only submission.. I wouldn't because my three names i suggested are ones id really want.

And for me, I thought of a lot of names I like a lot better than ‘Resident’ for that account since this is my original and I’m ok with this first and last name...so I also would be happy with any last name I submitted. And happy if I supply a few more that LL might like to use in addition. They wouldn’t have put the link to give additional submissions in the form if they did not want them. It’s something you can leave off in making a google form if you choose to, and for whatever reason, they chose not to.

  2. I decided to jump in and post a decent amount to just test the water and look at lots of threads here while playing a few games and racking up my first 500 posts but now I think I’ll be more selective and open it up maybe 3x/week unless I have a photo to post. I like the photo threads because it means seeing/sharing what people are getting up to inworld even if it’s just a change of clothes (though travelogue style photos with a little additional info and a slurl are my favorite), I like the Bellisseria topics because I recently got a Victorian and I’m settling in, decorating, etc...and I love the challenge threads so I always check that first.  I’m looking forward to reading over some more threads in the creation section. Still not sure how actually ‘social’ I feel here yet, I guess time will tell.

That depends on the criteria, I suppose.

My main problem with it is that it is not at all clear to me what those criteria are, exactly. I can live by rules -- if I know what they are.

Didn’t they tell you what your warning and suspension were for? I was under the impassion they did this?

You misunderstood what I said, which was explained in the rest of my post you didn't quote.

I see many violations, some real doozies, as I'm sure many others do, but they are not reported. It would be very unlikely that a well-respected member of the forum with no enemies would be reported.  But if you have an enemy who is out for revenge, or if you're an outsider, it's much more likely you'll be reported. My point in saying this, is that it's not fair to the person with a vindictive enemy or a new person.  I doubt anything can be done about it, but I have doubts emphasizing our role as a little nanny reporter of wrongdoings will help.

I read your post. I don’t think it matters who gets reported more or less. Since we are all adults, I think we get the same rules applied - a warning and getting referred to the guidelines, then whatever else they do, (strikes, temp bans, permanent bans?) seems par for the course for everyone breaking the rules, regardless of anyone having a a ‘tattletale’ enemy or not. I don’t believe anyone will get any reprimands and smack-downs if you aren’t breaking the rules. I think they actually go light with warnings when someone is new. There are certainly some people whose posts are more unpleasant and plentiful and loud and skirt the hedge but they don’t break the rules. I’d actually rather know who these people are up front and be forewarned.

I’ve visited an image board with very few rules and a ‘police yourself, we are adults here’ culture. It was a cess-pit regardless of the topic/section/thread and I did not stay.

I know a couple people in recent months who left this forum because of getting reported and they weren't any worse than anybody else.

But if they weren’t doing things against the rules then there would have been no reprimands...someone can report a person all day and they aren’t even going to get notified as long as they are following the rules. So this doesn’t hold water for me. If they kept breaking rules and kept getting busted and *then* left, well...I mostly consider that just a flounce. Regardless of ‘who else’ was breaking rules.

I am guilty of not even posting on the forums, but rather just lurking on them. :)

Most of my use of second life involves helping people with scripting via discord IM's. Scripting is the one thing this platform has over any others, it's the most creativity-empowering feature it has. Sadly, I feel like I've got lots of technical knowledge, but no actual creativity. So what I find most enjoyable is assisting people who are creative but might not have the technical knowledge.

It turns out you don't have to log in very much in order to do that. You can type up and send code anywhere to help people. Even via offline IM's.

I would log in, but I have a hard time finding  active people with similar interests. I'm a really talkative guy (with my voice, not my fingers) at that's pretty rare to find in Second Life.

You could come talk to me...but then I would bug you for scripts for my hare-brained ideas 🙃

  7. I have the sneaking suspicion that the steam released in some threads was built in others and that’s really a shame but there’s not a lot we can do about it except to police ourselves. Also, fling 🍟

We do have a silent audience often, despite many fewer replies, over 2k views. I do notice those things sometimes. I suspect there are many who never indeed post at all, but also learn much. About many things indeed.

Content optimization is only half the story when it comes to performance, it gets a lot of attention here as it's the only factor we have any control over. The complete issue is far more systemic and can't be changed. You could put the same OTT content from SL in an actual game engine and it will render a lot faster, but game engines can't do what SL do.

Again .. this is why LL wandered off and made Sansar, it's very different from how SL works because of all the lessons learnt from our side of the fence. I would go as far as to say we're more likely to see a functional mobile port of that platform long before SL just because of the design differences.

It wouldn't really make much difference as the initial content would have to be fetched, processed and rendered. Impostors in SL are created on the client, so they would still be slower than just not rendering people at all.

The stuff that needs to change to make SL run well enough for mobile (or well enough for desktop!) is all stuff that's pretty fundamental to how SL works.

The best we can hope for at this point is perhaps some kind of  rendered avatar dress up, just your avatar and nothing else. But even then it presents a number of daunting challenges translating SL's file/folder inventory system into something practical. Wouldn't be surprised that if we did get anything like this, it would only allow switching of previously saved outfits.

Example: 7seas fishes are nothing but a server call between fishing rod and fish server interacting until one is ‘caught’, then it is given into inventory so they are prim fish when worn as a pet, but just a flat prim texture photo of the fish that moves about when ‘sent’ to the aquarium inworld. I was thinking of things along those lines of thought. Particles, sprites, textures, something saved...then some things rendered more fully on a sliding scale.

(this is why Apple's store rules prohibit apps that excessively push the device or battery).

So, if SL is developing any kind of app that visually renders SL , then this might be one of the roads to instilling and influencing a (still optional but more) motivation-led path to encourage residents to adopt more optimized content? Introducing support on new platform actually is an ok time to call for new criteria and requirements to be able to run something correctly. Some areas and avatars ‘optimized for SL mobile’?

  10. I pretty much define ‘active’ as ‘still actually logs in and does something in SL’, I didn’t really have ‘logs in with x frequency’  or ‘is x amount of social’ in mind. Some people rarely interact with others at all but log in frequently, that’s just the way they do SL. Many fashion bloggers are basically platform dwellers who occasionally visit the backdrop places. And yes, I did know VV1 has that thing, and an offhand remark here and there by a few forum posters here kind of also inferred/implied that it has been some time since they had actually logged in so that just made me wonder about people in general. It’s obvious that many people who post here log in really frequently, but not so obvious about others. A few have referred to things I know aren’t really still a thing so it has left me wondering ‘Hm, when were they in last, I think it may have been a while?’.

So...curious enough to make this thread, but not really enough to actually look up anyone’s last login date? 😉 I have looked that up when trying to decide how best to contact someone though, if they don’t have contact info in their profile. If it’s been a month or more since they have last logged in, I might write them a notecard since I assume people’s IMs cap.

I was about to reply and was typing then checked out the op's profile then changed my answer rather than just not bothering, she is one of those my picks override tos people and therefore a complete one of chaucers favourite words about female anatomy so left a snarky response

I’m not sure what in my picks gives you the idea I do or would want to ‘override the TOS’ but you can of course reply as you please.

  12. If it’s confusing why I asked, some gamers stop playing a game but still post in general forum threads among friends they made, I’m actually in another 2 RL hobbies where people have stopped practicing the hobby but still interact with the communities and I do know that on one other VW based forum, there are a fair amount of people who go by their SL name but don’t actually log in anymore.

  13. Well, I guess the long title says it all but in case it gets chopped oddly...

I’m curious how many of you posting here are actually still active in SL?
And if you don’t log in to SL anymore, why you still post here or on other SL/virtual world based forums?

even though you didn't win ... they can still use your suggestion at a later date.

I figured that it was one reason for even holding the contest, to gather a big list of names, see how many were the same or similar, then use the ones they like. Probably much less labor intensive to do the sort of 6k of entries than for one LL staff member trying to gather that many. Even ‘best’ is subjective since afaik, the winners are just going to be the ones they like most, maybe influenced a bit by the ones that were submitted most? I submitted a lot of names for my Resident account, I’m fine with any of them being used.
