Gen-X is the 80's. Most of us graduated in the early 90's. The whole grunge thing was the young millennials. Why does everyone keep saying Xers are the 90's? We were born in the late 60's and the 70's.
I always forget the Gen-X pool is so broad, Im from the late 70s. my post was 100% self referential.

My fully clothed mesh avatar (Freya) has 4 scripts in total, including the Firestorm Bridge (grr), my AO, and an animated bento head/tail/ears (each from a different creator, using their proper animations) as well as separate hands/feet/chest. It has no hidden/unused parts (unlinked 125 parts from Freya), very little alpha blending, and uses less than 40 textures.
Can you say the same?
I mean, I cant fault you, because you have never seen me in-world, but your avatar is orders of magnitude heavier than mine.
6 hours ago, Wulfie Reanimator said:Just because you personally can't think of a useful/valuable reason to modify mesh objects doesn't mean that the feature should be disabled for everybody across the board. That's pretty anti-consumer behavior. There needs to a reason to make something no-modify, not the other way around.
That is exactly why I asked for specific examples, because I cant think of any. So far, Paul Hexem is the only one with a serious issue that can only be fixed by modding the head, and there is no way around the issue. The other few examples, while valid, seem to be more about quality of life rather than bricking a body for being no-mod.

Just go to any sim and mention 90s things, like Guns n Roses, or Pearl Jam, their Gen-X core compells them to react. Also, look for plaid shirts on top of t-shirts.

Also not too recent. Those types of insults (and a whole lot worse) have been flying around the innerwebz for a long time.
I feel like the only one who remembers how awful some chatrooms and gaming chats used to be. I think I'm eternally doomed to remember the experience. 😂 The era of Leet (and having to learn that nonsense just to understand people working way too hard to get around censors and chat filters) will forever be burned into my brain.
I remember those times, but not everyone was on IRC, or ICQ, and those systems were pretty anonymous.
The recent development that people complain about, is because now it IS mainstream, the awful and hateful things they say can be read by their friends, family, employers, etc. and they are not happy about people calling them out on it.
As soon as someone starts talking about cancel culture, it´s a giant red flag for me, what is it that they are holding back, that would get them "cancelled" I wonder. And why do they think that it should be protected from criticism ?

What is HOD?
Autohide is an appalling invention that should be banned by international agreements, like cluster bombs
I meant HUD, and yes, it is a foul invention, designed to hide poor rigging. But like with all other foul inventions, we just have to learn to work around them

Rogue autohide scripts.
HOD overrides autohide scripts.

Putting my own scripts or animations in.
Changing materials fully.
Solving all the things huds aren't scripted to do.
I had about 2 projects and 3 fixes I was able to do with my lady friend when Belleza went mod.
Cant you already do materials with BOM ? Also, you can use the animations externally, no reason to link them to the body itself.

The inability to rename or at least prefix a copy of the body with some relevant tidbit like skin/tat/applier used.
Rename the folder you put it in.

For prim stuff... okay, but for mesh bodies, I dont really see a lot of use for mod. The only reason mentioned so far, is performance, and lets be honest, taking two feet positions out of your body is less than a fraction of a drop in a bucket.
So what real, non-theoretical situations do people have that the non-mod bodies are ruining ?

There are no killer apps, no must have applications that make it mandatory, and no obvious ways it offers a more compelling user experience outside of niche toys.
Come on, have you played SuperHot ? AudioShield?
Im half joking, because those 2 are really fun, and Ive put a lot of time on them, but I have bounced off of most other VR capital G games (as oposed to tech demos, wich is 90% of VR titles)

There was some guy making custom heads, he has a heads shop, I think he was in one of those Linden spots where they promote some creator, the name of the brand eludes me right now, but maybe it was something like Modo, or Nodo.... or Logo, might have been Logo.

Sorry, still respectfully disagree. Just because people make sh*tty exploitative algorithms does not mean the entire concept of algorithms are inherently bad.
Just because we have gone and built a sh*tty exploitative internet model does not mean it HAD to be that way or that the concept of a global computing network is bad.
Just because a cave man picked up a piece of flint, tied it to a stick and bashed his neighbours brains out with it does not mean axes, knives and spears are inherently evil.
Your conflating the baseline technology with the purposes people set them to. Technology always has a myriad of uses. Some good, some bad. Its up to us collectively what we choose to do with them.
I mean.......if you dont think the internet and virtual worlds have been a net benefit to your life, why are you using them?
Technology is not an abstract, it inherits the biases of it´s developers, this isnt some revolutionary thought.

Yes, but in SL monsters are just people with some serious kinks.
My chain of trust would be Objects>Humans>Monsters>Animals>Furries>Anime

I'm quite willing to believe Orwar and Catrie that it is more multicultural than my admittedly superficial experience of it would suggest.
It isnt really very multicultural in it´s origin, its 100% european victorian. The first picture posted by Catrie I would put as Afrofuturism, nowhere near Steampunk, the second picture just has jewelry made of gears, but not a single working mechanism, not steam OR punk. And the third one is a caucasian cosplaying asian.
Im not going to say that a multicultural steampunk is impossible, but the evidence presented for it is not convincing me at all.
And I agree that it´s super niche, steampunk was soaring 10 or 15 years ago, but it´s not trending now, and it hasnt been long enough for a revival, that´s just my 2 cents.

Here is the thing. I have a SL daughter that likes to be on her little, but we enjoy going to Tulagi and taking out the subs to hunt drone ships. If there is a TOS against it, then I need to stop her before she gets in trouble. But if its not, then where is the harm?
The possible harm is getting banned by the sim owner, and then the wont be able to go there even if they change bodies.
It takes very little effort to make an adult outfit and use that for combat situations.

How do you feel when someone offers unsolicited to give you a "better looking" avatar?
if you're a girl and they're a girl,
they are actually marketing agents of several makers.
Most women don't like seeing other women as better than themselves (naturally). If you are a girl and they are a boy, yes they want to slex you.
If you are male and they are female, they are actually a marketing agency.
they use female avatars to approach you while actually behind the avatar is a big bearded man.
LoLIf you're a boy and they're a boy, they're actually a gay guy looking to slex you.
Leaving the raving paranoia aside. Wouldnt it be a terrible business practice to go around incognito, offering people to buy bodies for them? If you give someone a body, as an embassador from a brand, at least you are improving that brands image, but why the disguise? It makes no sense.

The problem with that theory is it gives me night sweats. Before, this forum had One Of Those People in Britain and an equivalent One Of Those People in Australia, meaning that the earth's rotation would remain in balance. Now a third using One Of Those Person who also uses "whilst" suggests that the balance is off and possibly apocalyptic wobbling will occur.
Are you sure that "whilst" isnt a typo and they meant "wishlist" ?
Where are the over 40 people?

Sure, but where else can people go to get "Christmas" written on a paper cup, in order to make a point in their culture war tik-tok ?
