  1. Three-body Problem by Liu Cixin, cause apparently Netflix is making a show out of it (I have very, very, very low expectations of it, cause some parts of the book are too abstract to "act out" in a movie, and seeing as a western media is making it it'll probably just end up a complete mess like Mulan). I read about 1/3 of the first book but then stopped cause it's a very, very heavy read, but pushed myself to start again. It's definitely an awesome book, but due to the overwhelming amount of exposition it almost feels like reading a textbook. Basically a Dan Brown book except 10x more complex.

And then there's the whole debated about what constitutes a child avatar.  People.assume it only means the actual tiny little ones who are obvious children.  All too often lately, I've seen more than a few whose faces are definitely childlike as well as the clothing, hair and accessories yet have some boobs and hips. I'd classify a lot of those as children (appear to be less than 18).  It's a fine line that all many seem to be pushing. These ones often have to put a disclaimer in their profiles about being over 18 as they are aware they don't look it.

By that description then pretty much anyone wearing a pale Asian skin with a kawaii-style shape would be a child avatar to you then.

  3. It's annoying when sellers name their items, usually no-mod so you can't even change it, with non-English words, ironically while typing in English. If you name something like "kimono shiro" (white kimono), if people didn't speak Japanese how in the world would they know what this item is? Is it that hard to name your items in English, especially since you're already typing in English anyways as inventory folders aren't unicode compatible?

  4. Is there anything you can achieve with LSL that you can't do with Firestorm's native "move-lock" function? The only thing I don't like about FS's native function is you still move, but you simply walk back to original spot afterwards. I would prefer it if you stayed completely stationary. Not looking for scripts that require you to rez something cause that would completely defeat the purpose. I did a quick search and it seems SL no longer allows anti-push since it can be used for griefing or something? There are some listings in marketplace, but I have a strong feel most of them don't work at all.

  5. Hardly a new issue.

As someone who speaks Chinese/Japanese and lived in East Asia most my life, I facepalm/cringe whenever I see those lame "Kanji" tattoos that are completely nonsense, or "oriental" tattoos that look nothing oriental. I guess people just want things that look "exotic" without giving a ***** about the cultural origins. I could literally go into Photoshop, spend 60sec typing 猪脑子 (pig brains), export it as a PNG, upload that into SL as a tattoo, and idiots will buy it cause "the characters look exotic".

  6. I have a piano that I'm trying to insert some music into, as the ones that came with it are terrible. Streaming won't work cause I don't own the land, and I don't think this works anyways as I'm trying to play music through an object. Is there any way to accomplish this besides uploading like 100+ tiny sound clips at 10sec each? I was hoping I could upload the files somewhere and have SL play them back.

  7. Obvious choice is Utilizator "M4 anime" or "M4 venus" head, but I just can't bring myself to buy them for one reason: no demo for a mesh head (no idea why as they have a demo for one of their other heads, I guess just overconfidence people will trust the brand or something). I don't doubt the quality given the truckload of mods available for it, but how am I supposed to know if I should buy the anime or the venus head just based on one ad image? Are there any other good Bento heads around that aren't too chibi/exaggerated? I like the semi-realistic feel on the M4 venus head.

  8. What program exports animations in the .anim format? Seems .bvh is the standard but .anim is an accepted format as well, and I wasn't able to find much info for this anywhere. Also, when you try to upload something in .anim, there's no previewer, so how do you set the animation priority, loop true/false, ease in/out, etc? Is it simply defaulted to some values?

I don't really have an actual .anim animation to play with so I basically just renamed a .bvh to .anim (which won't be a working animation of course) to test uploading it.

Well, your profile is blank . . Blank profiles do not really incite people to talk.

This is an alt, i.e. not the avatar I use in-world. I like to keep forum and in-world separate cause it's easy to get wrapped up in drama here which I don't want to affect my in-world experience, and a way to filter who I decide to befriend here on the forum.

Also, that quote of yours comes on rather strong; it reeks of desperation for attention. Not to mention a lot of people on the grid need to be presented with a TL:DR if you write more than three sentences because they're pathetic excuses for human beings. It is usually better to start off gently and see whether the other party is partial to engaging or whether you've just wasted your time composing such a long introduction.

It came off strong because it was more of a rant. I was pissed off at how unfriendly people are in-world and wanted to vent, so feel free to take it with a bucket of salt.

Also, I only message people who have profiles I gauge as someone who's open to making friends. These are usually comprehensive profiles that are friendly, inviting and wholesome to read. If someone has a snobby, condescending profile then why would I waste my time trying to be friendly? I mean if they literally write "looking for other people who like ABC" and I like ABC, then I guess they're just lying or don't like my name or something stupid like that.

On 9/5/2020 at 1:33 PM, Orwar said:

Also, copy-pasting people's likes from their profiles to try to make yourself appear a potential person of interest is inadvisable. If someone has written 'I love beaches!', don't just say 'Oh, I love beaches also!' - that's not engagement, that's mirroring. Instead, try something like 'Hey, did you ever visit <insert beach sim here>? I thought that place was wonderful!'. Who knows, a few moments later you may be re-exploring that beach with someone you made intrigued to discover it.

If you read my post you would've known your second sentence is exactly what I wrote, not just "hey I love beaches too". I'm usually genuine when it comes to my likings. I used to "fake" some interests to get to know a wider range of people but that didn't work out at all, so now I only bother being friendly to people I know I'll share my true interests with.

Many people will be around for you to socialize with but you don't know them and they don't know you. If you guys don't like similar things or happen to be very opinionated it will be a bit difficult to connect. Point is for both to have genuine fun when together.

For example right this moment i am watching a TV show (not even logged in SL, talking on skype) with a female "friend" we met in SL and we are not a couple or partnered or whatever, just get along fine so whenever we are in the mood spend time together. (not on a 24/7 basis, we would get tired of each other if we did.)

Not everyone will fit but many with similar likes will.

Exactly, hence why I only IM those people who I feel they share similar interests with me like in the example I showed above, and the reason why I never IM people with empty profiles cause it's a waste of time. But it seems even people with similar interests with me, 90% of the time it ends up being a waste of time cause they lack basic manners, is a misogynist, or simply don't like me due to my name or whatever.

To the OP.. its not.. just be yourself and be patient and dont try and force anything. Those who are similar to you will find you over time. Quality friends over Quantity always.

Well tell me why 90% of my interactions end up like this...

    Quote

Me: Waves and smiles! I read your profile and it seems we like and dislike a lot of things, such as xx, xx and xx so I thought I'd drop you an IM! It's rare to find someone who also enjoys xx, I heard there's a [insert some random topic about xx].
    Some person: uh huh

I'm not making this crap up. This is legit what I get 90% of the time. It's like I'm playing a parallel universe version of SL where most people are assholes.

<rant> Yes some people are "shy" and prefer being alone (though what in the world are they doing in social places then), well guess what? I'm probably the shy-est person on my entire friends list yet I don't act like a *****ing indifferent aloof ***** to anyone attempting to be nice to me, it's called basic social etiquette. I'm already way out of my comfort zone even initiating the IM. Every time I get a reply like that (or worse, dead silence and they're not afk), it just kills my microscopic remaining amount of motivation even more. I think my motivation to try to befriend others is pretty much nonexistent now thanks to these people. </rant>

Just needed to get that out of my system. Tried to chat with 3 random strangers earlier and I got: 1 dead silence but not afk, and 2 replies like that. Made me feel like ***** so I logged out to do something else.

Thank you for this thread.  In spite of the ignorance of some of the posters, I think it's vital to make this a more friendly place for everyone, not just white folks.  White folks are NOT the default people on the planet.  Numerically, the default people are actually the rest of us...  Better yet, there should be no default person... we are all individuals and there are many and sundry beautiful colours, cultures and traditions.  All we would like is to be accepted and not to be portrayed in ugly ways.  I really do hope Linden will take a look at some of the pages in the MP.

White people are the default folk of SL. Not saying that's a good thing but it's what happens when the software is developed in the US, and mostly caters to English speakers. Literally 90% of the product ads by mainstream stores in SL feature a white woman/man. 9% might have a black person, the 1% are the other ethnicities like Asian or Mexican or something. I go to crowded sims often and that percentage is also what I see in avatars.

I'm not white, I'm Asian, and I feel disadvantaged or even discriminated against in pretty much everywhere in SL cause I refuse to make my avatar look like your garden variety (tanned) white woman with blonde or brown hair.

  13. It's hard to find a non-sexual hangout that's crowded and doesn't look outdated. Lesbian Teahouse looks like its furnishings haven't been updated since 2008. Other sims that look well-kept, unfortunately are completely dead.

I'll be the first to admit I keep an extremely small circle of friends who view SL in much the way I do.  I'm me.  The person you would meet inworld is the same person you would meet on the street. (minus the 4 inch heels and perfect hair). My question is....do you feel your persona in SL is you or do you think of your avatar as a completely different entity.  I've only done a small.amount of RP but the personality of my character was basically me.  I'm interested to know how one can totally separate the two.  For example, people who play as something other than a basic human.  Is it possible to immerse yourself to the extent that your entire personality is different?

My SL is pretty much identical to my RL, aside from the appearance as you mentioned. Also like you, I have an extremely small circle of friends I don't mind sharing lots of RL details with, which I believe keeps conversations fresh. I'm not great at keeping "acquaintances" or "casual friends", they all end up getting removed at some point because they don't fit my personality. I'm also not great at making new friends cause 99% of the people I come into contact with seem to have a very rigid definition of what type of person they want to become friends with.

  15. 90% of OP's posts make so little sense it's like something taken completely out of context of a random private IM. OP apparently thinks people on the forum are very familiar with who OP is and who her so-called friends are. It makes me assume she's just trolling for attention. I don't know what's with referring to herself in third person as well but it's cringey af, like something taken out of r/teenagers.

Yep.  Precisely what I'm talking about.  No, you do NOT have the right to ridicule people for their appearance, EVER.  Mot in RL, and not in a game.  You have a serious flaw of character, which is sad.  To "not give a cap" about other people is another serious negative character trait, bad enough on its own, but to further exacerbate this negative character trait by basing it on looks?!?!?

Whatever.  Believe what you want.  My post wasn't about convincing those that practice pixel snobbery to change their ways.  My post was merely an explanation, for those who had asked, what I mean by the term and how I arrived at my conclusions vis-a-vis pixel snobbery.

You're the one with a "serious flaw in character" if you think everyone should have the same opinion as you. Equating SL appearance to RL appearance, lmao, how old are you again? You do realize that it literally takes 10 seconds to look presentable in SL by simply loading a default linden avatar? Go read my post again and google what a Ruth is. Also learn the difference between "ridicule/mock" and "not give a crap" before you start spewing this bull*****.

    • Not give a crap = I have no intention of interacting with people who looks like Ruth and have been in SL 10 years, when even the default Linden avatars look better these days. They're strangers who will probably reside in my viewer cache for X days before they're wiped, period
    • Ridicule/mock = actively IMing them saying that they look like crap

It's my choice who I decide to interact with on SL. If you got a problem with me not spending the effort at being super friendly and giddly to every single person I come across then too bad, deal with it. If you want to be the ambassador of people who troll for attention and make friends with all of them then go right ahead. Seems 90% of the people in this thread don't seem to agree with you.

  17. People have every right to ridicule and not associate with people who put zero effort in their looks, when it's so damn easy to look at least acceptable in a sim like SL. No one said you have to look like a Caucasian, tanned, slim supermodel with blonde hair and huge breasts, which unfortunately is the "SL standard". Now there's a huge difference between looking completely outdated, versus looking unique and non-mainstream. If your SL age is 10 years and you look literally like Ruth (google it if you don't know what Ruth is) or Noob Linden, there are only two possible explanations:

    1. You're trolling for attention
    2. You couldn't give less of a crap about your own appearance, therefore you shouldn't expect anyone else to give a crap about you

If you look like a rainbow coloured elf with a sombrero, but all body parts and clothing at least look like they were made in the 21st century, that's called looking unique and non-mainstream, and perfectly acceptable unless you're a bigot.

I've helped several people update their avatar or helped them find outfits. SL is more than a dress up simulator , there are lots of other things to do besides dress up your avatar. Plus not everyone knows where to find things or they need help figuring out how to work huds or the best way to tweak their shape or whatever.

There are people who do makeovers in SL  as a business and there are people who do it as a hobby.  The people I helped do a full avatar make over mainly just needed some advice and help on working huds and wanting to know where to shop or needed an opinion of what looked (not everyone has a fantastic sense of fashion). I've also walked people through Bakes on Mesh or helped when someone was trying to find an outfit or dress for an event. I've never charged for it but almost everyone has compensated me in someway, even if it's just  giving me an extra gacha thing. Sometiems I only spent 15 mins but with one friend over the course of a week I helped me go from a 10 year old avatar to full mesh.

Just because you find something easy or simple doesn't mean everyone else does.

Read the part where I said "for 5k". I never said "no one should get help with styles". I said "no one pays 5k for a stylecard", because that's what friends are for, which is pretty much the same thing you're describing. If you have a business and all you're selling are 5k stylecards, well you wouldn't have a lot of business would you?

    11 hours ago, RowanMinx said:

Even Target has style consultants and I'm not sure too many billionaires shop there.

    https://jobs.target.com/styleconsultant

Do they charge 5k for it? I highly doubt your average shoppers who walk into a local Target can afford to dish out 5k for a RL style card. Your style consultant opening probably does it for free or very cheap.

  19. I've seen lots of shape sellers (which is already the lamest thing you can sell) refuse to provide demos. I don't get how people can be convinced to buy a shape based on one ad. Same goes for poses/AOs without demos. Yes I definitely know what the animation will look like based on one static image... /smh
