  1. I follow mostly  politics and current events on twitter, so this is what they consider top content for me. I will allow that searching for #secondlife (not the same as "second life") does return more adult content. But it's a nice mix of things: stuff I've already seen on flickr and some I haven't—and yes some furries—but not at a level that requires panic.

I had to make a point of looking for them

Classic filter bubble. I couldn’t find any. I’m mocking but this is also a real thing. Algorithmic searches prioritize what you actively look for far more than anything else. Why? Because the average user simply hoovers up whatever comes along in the endless scroll. Searching for furry content tells the algorithm you  really really want to see it.

  3. I remember buying that hair and being disappointed. Since then though, comments on these forums made me aware that many modern hairs aren’t much better despite their lower listed complexity. 200k triangles or more on some of these multi-style, multi-accessory HUD type hairs.

When I want a truly lower lag outfit I start with Slink Redux and a hair that is actually lower on render weight.

I use FS area search (uncheck “attachment” for your attached items) to inspect my worn items more thoroughly. Most of the time I don’t care and wear Belleza though..... part of the problem!

#2 ..a setting that toggles off special characters in Name-lines and force-displays name text in easily-readable characters

Not ideal but Firestorm contact sets can help at least. I don't want to disable display names but some drive me crazy, special characters, content, whatever.

If you add someone to a contact list you can assign them an alias or strip their display name ("Rem DN") on a case by case basis. Maybe everybody knows this but as something I recently discovered, thought I would mention it! I'll probably use this to remind me who people are when name changes happen as well.

  5. The lewd sign above the bedroom window is what tips it into obnoxious for me. I'm not a prude, far from it. I DO on the other hand keep my depraved sex furniture and artwork within the walls of my home. I'm sure nobody on that block needs to be aware of the "spitroasting zone"

You have NO idea how welcome it would be if you could do that, and make the results available for others to download it too.
I'm fairly sure that @NiranV Dean would even welcome the help.

It's honestly a little over my head for anything beyond personal tinkering. There is an Arch Linux user though who created a package that compiles Firestorm directly from the nightly source.  I sent an email asking him to take a look to see if its even possible in theory.

  7. Speaking of Boomers I am grateful for the "very online" surname choice of Yeetly, if that is indeed what I heard*. It is bound to be one of the most popular choices  and a solid indicator of people I can safely avoid on account of my being an old. 😂

    * And I'm 99% sure that's what it was:  Know Your Meme: Yeet

Hats off to the winner (sincerely!)
I shall now yeet myself yeetly out of the thread.

  8. I heard back from LL that Linux is unsupported but that's OK. It means I can continue troubleshooting knowing I didn't inadvertently run afoul of the TOS or anything. So an odd technical glitch, at least I *should* be able to figure out on my own. It's vexing though because I don't tend to update my system willy nilly (technical term) and it was working one day and not the next. Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't know anything about WINE but this makes me suspect it gave a non-random fictitious MAC address to the application to use.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that. I know Virtualbox can have that effect. And I understand that is why games (I know SL is not a game!) do block these kind of connections.

  10. Anyone out there use WINE to run Windows viewers in Linux? I have seen Black Dragon and Catznip mentioned,  both of which make sense given their unique features.

I use Black Dragon this way for photography. Yesterday I was greeted with the following: "Login failed. Second life cannot be accessed from this computer. If you feel this is an error, please contact support@secondlife.com"  Which of course I did. I also verified the same issue running Firestorm in WINE, and that my account is in good standing and can log on other standard viewers. I understand nobody here can offer me support. But I'm more generally curious if anyone has had issues using WINE.

I assume (alternate suggestions welcome) that my configuration triggered filters designed to prevent something more sinister than mediocre snapshots 😂  I am fairly technically inclined and it's possible with research I could compile this viewer for myself in Linux. At least, I have seen archaelogical evidence of that being done. I guess at this moment I would hesitate not knowing whether, after all that work, some algorithmically controlled mechanism might be waiting to drop anvil on my head.

What's the technology behind blocking viewers, how smart is it? Are there a lot of false positives, have you experienced one?

  11. Five or six people you genuinely vibed with ain’t bad! After a while I think we develop a keener sense of what to look for in a profile, a look, a venue and maybe the hit rate goes up? But sometimes (often, I may not be as hot as I think I am...) I will spend the evening in a club and not  click with anyone. Avatar age may also be a factor.

I saw someone asking about this in the group yesterday, so I checked for myself and sent a picture to one of the mods. Seeing a hotfix released that quickly speaks volumes to me. I've gotten so used to the "file a complaint and pray" approach to customer service. Glad to see they are on top of it during the immediate roll out.
