Yeah, its bad. Throttlebook users are going to be even worse off, given that they have no CPU cooling.
Well, when I got home I decided to see what it's like on my OG M1 MacBook Pro, and it's just fine. I guess I need to find out what the hell is wrong with that Mac Studio.

I only ready the first page or so, I guess I'll go back and catch up. I did update the Linden viewer to check out the PBR Winter Wonderland on a Mac Studio (M1 Max). Pure single digit FPS misery. I could get to the mid-teens at the skating lake with 5 other avatars around if I turned off shadows.
If this is the future of SL on the Mac, don't bother. It's over.

You know, all you have to do is reading... 🫣
Good luck installing that on a Fermi card.

This driver is for GT* 4/5x0 cards (Fermi GPU).
The GT* 6/7x0 cards got a newer GPU (Kepler). Once again, the proper, current driver version for a GT 730 is 474.44.
There are Fermi based variants of the GT 730.

Uninstall the driver, reboot and let Windows auto detect it. There are multiple versions of the GT 730, but they all should run SL and all work with the 391.35 driver.

My friend who does music just recommended the SM7B too. I think I am sold.
Check out the SM27 and KSM32 as well.

I love teenage engineering.
(Actually, they have a headset with attached and detachable mics that's quite affordable by their standards, but I have no experience with any of their stuff. It all just looks so cool.)
Adorable looking products but I think I'll stick with the rubberized brick aesthetic of my Zoom H4n Pro and refugees from the Island of Misfit Microphones.

The nerdier the better :P!!
Careful, you can find yourself down a rabbit hole where they would have you believe if you aren’t using a thousand dollar minimum setup you might as well be yelling through a tin can on a string.

After initial sales, you know Apple is going to have additional lower-price offerings with similar features. Example: lower resolution display.
Or they'll dump remaining inventory into whatever landfill all the Newtons and Pippins are in.

I’ve found a similar result with nvidia as well, where I had a first gen GTX Titan punching well above its weight, outperforming a GTX 780 by a decent bit, despite being nearly the same card on paper. Sometimes drivers do matter.
The Titan has twice the VRAM of the 780. That's what makes the difference, not the drivers.

Can’t stop the i7-2600! Slap an SSD and a reasonably modern Nvidia card in there and you’re good for another ten years!

I can't speak for the Mac OS side of this post, being a "PC".
The last Mac that couldn't run High Sierra was discontinued in 2012, and that was an iMac only available to education customers. So except for people who bought a Mac from a surplus auction after it got too old for an elementary school to want it, this probably isn't an issue for anyone. The only use for Macs that old is to run ancient hardware or software that newer versions of the macOS won't run, and it shouldn't be connected to the internet.

Not for that price. Not gaming laptops anyway.
$699 is about where gaming laptops start. I’m sure anyone can shop around and find better ones and better deals, but I just went to see what Best Buy has.
I’m confident either will be more capable at SL than the Asus, and more versatile. I think a discrete GPU is a defining feature of gaming laptops. If someone is open to using an APU, that opens up cheaper options.

I think this is a genius move and if they have any brains at all, they'll make Zero a permanent freebie
It's great that Erika Zero works with the same clothes that fit Erika, unlike the other mesh freebies (that I'm aware of) that don't seem to fit anything. The only drawback is designer support, which is not great. Even so, Erika Zero is the first free mesh body that didn't make me want to immediately throw all of my money at Maitreya.

If you install the Linux subsystem on your Chromebook you should theoretically be able to run a Linux SL viewer. Some people have gotten it to work, but it’s been a couple years since anyone posted about it.

I still see mesh avatars with flexi hair or even with ballgowns made from flexi sections that separate when they move.
I'm still using flexi hair I bought in 2009. There are still cases where flexi hair is better than mesh hair helmets.

Whatever floats your boat. I think you should make your avatar to please one person and it isn't "someone needs an upgrade" guy.
For me the two big pros of mesh bodies and heads are, they look better (totally worth it for no more lumpy boobs), and nowadays shopping for mesh items is much easier. Everyone makes items for the big two mesh bodies, and I can be very confident almost anything I get will fit out of the box. I do not miss adjusting, resizing and finding proper alpha layers for classic avatars.
