  1. Nope, otherwise we would have rolled those regions back. This particular issue was a great example of how changes to "unrelated" parts of Second Life's underlying technologies can break core Resident facing services like the simulators. It's an extremely complex system!
  2. Second Life Server and Events The SLS Channel will be restarted on Tuesday, 2022-07-05, from 06:30 - 11:30 PDT, with no version change (2022-06-15.572665). Second Life RC This week we'll be rolling version 2022-06-22.572768 to the BlueSteel Release Candidate channel - this is the first part of a series of changes to make rolling the grid easier for our Engineers. The other RC Channels will be restarted with no version change. Coming Soon*… Another maintenance release is likely our next candidate for promotion As always, Coming Soon represents our best guess at what will be moved from Aditi to RC in the coming weeks. We may need to delay, reshuffle, or remove upcoming releases for operational reasons.
  3. Second Life Server and Events This week we'll be deploying version 2022-06-15.572665 to the SLS and Events channels on Tuesday, 2022-06-28. This version features the addition of Hand_Size back in to LLGetVisualParams(), crash fixes, and improved simulator logging. Release notes: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-06-16.572665.html Scheduled: 2022-06-28 06:00 Pacific Daylight Time Second Life RC The Release Candidate channels will be restarted on Wednesday, 2022-06-29, from 07:00 - 09:30 PDT. The RC channel regions were all already on 2022-06-15.572665 and will simply be restarted to the same version. 4. There actually is a difference! When you restart a region, you just restart the region. When we do rolling restarts, we restart the machine* the regions are running on. Helps clean out lingering memory issues and it has that nice new-simhost smell. * Okay, this isn't technically true because it's The Cloud, but it's basically true.
  5. Second Life Server and Events The Main Channels (SLS + Event regions) will be restarted on Tuesday, 2022-06-14, from 06:30 - 11:30 PDT, with no version change. Second Life RC The Release Candidate channels will be restarted on Wednesday, 2022-06-15, from 07:00 - 09:30 PDT. The RC channel regions were all already on 2022-05-27.572237 and will simply be restarted to the same version.
  6. I'm one of the people who discusses Feature Requests, but Aishagain has the right idea here; an idea like that would be too large for any one Linden to approve.
  7. Second Life Server and Events This week we'll be rolling version 2022-05-27.572237 to the Second Life Server and Events channels. This version features changes to support upcoming Premium Plus launch including updates of previously hard-coded Premium values for some limitations. (Release notes to this effect will be available soon) Scheduled for 2022-06-07 06:00 Pacific Daylight Time Second Life RCs We'll be restarting all RCs this week, no new version will be deployed to any of them. Scheduled for 2022-06-08 07:00 Pacific Daylight Time
  8. Second Life Server This week we put out version 2022-05-06.571613 to the Second Life Server channel. This version includes the return of offline friendship and group offers. Second Life RC This week all RC channels received version 2022-05-20.571998. This version includes a speculative fix for objects failing to appear at login or moving/teleporting between regions, as well as multiple logging fixes and enhancements for the simulator, a fix for some circumstances when the "seed capability" used to fetch other viewer capabilities would fail to be granted, a mouseover text-only change to the LSL constant TP_ROUTING_FREE to reflect what its actual value is, and a substantial improvement to the speed with which regions save periodically and on shutdown.
  9. Why do I log in standing three meters above the spot for my first meeting of the day every single time? It's slightly ridiculous.
  10. Hi! I'm the Simulator QA Lead for Second Life and one of the Lindens who worked on Event Regions. I'm hoping I can clarify a couple of things about the new offering: * The "20% increased script performance" is due to several factors, but it is far from the only area of improvement for Event Regions. ** In synthetic benchmarks we saw an increase of between 22% and 45% in speed of script execution. ** In production Resident-run event tests, we observed approximately 31% more scripts (that is to say, for example, from 30% to 39.1%) running per frame with an equivalent amount of spare time at the end of each frame * On a standard "Full Region" simhost we share various connections to services like Inventory, Group Chat, and internal logging. On Event Regions, those connections are either exclusive, or shared with one other Event Region in the special case of regions that are adjacent in-world when we want to get high performance region crossing. * Related to the above points, we're putting a lot (and I do mean a lot) more compute power into each Event Region. This costs us a substantial amount more money compared to a standard Full Region, but frees up the main simulator thread to do what it does best and simulate. * The compute power that we're putting toward these Event Hosts is more advanced than what we're able to use for Full Regions right now (for boring supply chain reasons). I fully expect this to change with time as resources become more freely available, but for now we're reserving the latest CPU cores for our highest end product first * We're also taking this as an opportunity to address long standing pain points with simulator performance in general which will absolutely benefit anyone who uses Second Life, whether they own an Event Region, a Full Region, a Homestead or Openspace, are a Mainland owner, or just hop in-world to visit.
  11. Happy May! Second Life Server This Tuesday we rolled version 2022-04-21.571166 to all Second Life Server and Events channels https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-04-21.571166.html Deployed on 2022-05-03 Second Life RC Version 571411 will roll to all Second Life RC channels on 2022-05-04 from 07:00-10:00 Pacific Daylight Time https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-04-29.571411.html
  12. Second Life Server The Main Channel will be updated to version 570305 on Tuesday, 2022-04-19. Our engineers will be keeping an extra eye on this roll after some recent hiccups, so it may take a bit longer, or we may end it part-way through and resume later. For the latest news this week, the Status Blog should have the latest information when we know it. https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-04-01.570305.html Second Life RC We'll be deploying version 570936 to a small subsection of the Release Candidate channels on Wednesday, 2022-04-20. This release uses some more recent technologies from our viewer that the simulator was (until our recent tooling update) unable to take advantage of. We're taking this one slow, so you're likely to see this version move from a few RCs to all the RCs, then finally to Second Life Server as we gain confidence that things are working as expected. As always if you encounter bugs (particularly that don't reproduce on version 570305), please don't hesitate to file a report at https://jira.secondlife.com https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-04-15.570936.html Regions that are not being updated this week will be restarted during the deploy process.
  13. Second Life Server We'll be deploying version 2022-03-24.569934 to the main channel on Tuesday. As mentioned last week this simulator supports the upcoming profile Capability. Scheduled: 2022-04-05 06:30-11:30 Pacific Daylight Time Second Life RCs We'll be deploying version 2022-04-01.570305 to the Release Candidate channels on Wednesday. This simulator fixes issues with llRequestAgentData and llRequestSimulatorData sometimes failing after they've been called repeatedly, a couple of crash fixes, and adding some additional logging around startup. Scheduled: 2022-04-06 07:00-09:30 Pacific Daylight Time
  14. Hello everyone! Tried to make this post last night but my logins weren't working Second Life Server This week we're restarting all Second Life Server regions on 2022-03-29 (which should already be done by the time of this post) Second Life RCs We'll be deploying a new version (2022-03-24.569934) to all RCs this week. This simulator contains a new capability to work with our upcoming Profiles viewer. A release notes page can be found at https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-03-24.569934.html
  15. In fairness to you I used sneaky Linden powers to hide the post until it had actual useful content in it. (It unfortunately lacks a link to release notes as the generator is out of commission until I can talk to a dev today.)
  16. Second Life Server We're restarting all Second Life Server regions on Tuesday 2022-03-08 starting at 06:00 Pacific Standard Time (n.b. The United States switches to Daylight Savings time next week before our Tuesday deploy window.) Second Life RC We'll be deploying a new version 2022-03-01.569051 with internal fixes (mostly to how the simulator starts up before you can teleport/log in, and how it shuts down after everyone is disconnected) as well as a fix for a crash and a fix to an LSL math function Scheduled 07:00 Wednesday 2022-03-09 Pacific Standard Time (n.b. The United States switches to Daylight Savings time next week before our Tuesday deploy window.)
  17. https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2022-02-10.568388.html exists now! Apologies for the wait, I missed one of the buttons I needed to push, so it was just sitting there finished and waiting on my computer.
  18. Hey Aisha, just to clarify I'm aware of what the issue is, it shows that you "can't access" the page because the notes don't exist yet, and you can't access something that doesn't exist.
  19. I'm very glad to hear that the new roll process has been relatively smooth for everyone, even if it's ongoing. Behind the scenes we've had some issues crop up (not unexpected given this is the first time we're using the new process in production) so it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but our metrics show that it's about 10x better qualitatively than previous rolls in terms of content loss and regions staying stuck offline. As far as the release notes, I'm on the case and will have something for you soon, but I don't know how soon.
  20. Rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated! 🙂 Second Life Server We'll be rolling version 2022-02-10.568388 to all Second Life Server (Main Channel) machines. This is the same version that's currently on all RCs Scheduled for 2022-03-01 06:00 Pacific Standard Time Please note: We're using a new version of our internal tools to handle this roll which we believe will avoid recent problems with content loss during rolls. However the trade off for this is that we will roll somewhat slower. Individual regions should still not be down for very long, the roll as a whole may just take a bit longer (at least until we get the new process worked out and figure out if we can speed things back up.) Second Life RCs We'll be restarting all RC regions without a change of version, using the same tooling change as described above. Scheduled for 2022-03-02 07:00 Pacific Standard Time
  21. To indirectly address some of the concerns raised here: We've been experimenting with rolling slightly slower (at the scale of our main grid, this in practice means fewer simhosts [the machines that hold multiple simulators] being updated at once). This has led to better outcomes for both Residents (more options on where to go when the screen starts shaking) and our backend systems (fewer regions stopping and starting at once means less pressure on those systems). We had some connectivity issues last week (xenomorph in the vents, oh dear 😰) which led to a portion of simhosts restart commands not being received by our servers. We determined that it would be more disruptive to do an additional rolling restart than to just let them continue running until this week when they'll be restarted as normal.
  22. Hello everyone! This week we'll be restarting Second Life Server and all RCs at their usual times of 6 AM Pacific on Tuesday and 7 AM Pacific on Wednesday respectively. We had hoped to get a new DRTSIM out but ran into an issue with the dataserver event firing when it should not under some circumstances.
  23. Short&Sweet, hands are still not great as per my post Tuesday: Weekly rolling restart Wednesday: Version 566406 to half of all RCs on the usual schedule, all other RCs will be rolling restarted as normal.
  24. Today we restarted all simhosts on the main channel, and tomorrow we'll be restarting all RC channels. No versions or configurations will change as a result of these restarts; you can expect that most weeks if we don't have a new build to deploy to a channel, we'll restart it during the usual deploy windows. Individual region downtime should be on order of minutes for most of these restarts, and we generally finish restarting all of the Second Life Server channel in under 2 hours. Second Life Server, 2021-11-29 Next Monday 2021-11-29 we will be moving all simulators currently running on the old configuration previously mentioned here to our new configuration. After this change, all simulators running on our Agni grid will be running on the new configuration, regardless of version. In the coming days we'll have a blog post talking a bit more about the improvements we made with this configuration change, so keep an eye on the Second Life blog roll for that. Again, to emphasize, this change will happen on Monday 2021-11-29 at 7:00 AM Pacific Monday Morning Update: We've had to tweak the schedule slightly, new details will be figured out this morning/afternoon Pacific Time. The best bet for up to date information today is the Second Life Grid status blog at status.secondlifegrid.net (as I injured my hands over the weekend so I'm much slower at getting this forum post updated, oops 😐) Second Life RCs, 2021-12-01 Next Wednesday 2021-12-01 we will be deploying a new version to some RCs. This version's primary change is that when a viewer attempts to toggle the value of Preferences->Chat->Email me IMs when I'm offline, viewers will get a system IM informing them that the correct way to change their IM and Group Notice settings is via the accounts page at secondlife.com. A future viewer release will remove this checkbox. Scheduled for Wednesday 2021-12-01 at 7 AM Pacific
  25. Edited once I finally got the release note tooling to stop telling me it wanted more coffee with the release notes for version 2021-11-11.565737, and clarified that this version will replace 2021-10-29.565204
