  1. When the Lab changed the policy on the non-LL discussions on the board the topic was discussed at one of their group meetings --- I think the Web User Group one.  I logged in and went to that meeting. They bought in someone to takes questions about the mboards and when I popped her a question it was mainly ignored.

It's a good thing that you aren't in charge of the Mentor program then.

Maybe some residents should take a step back from helping to let the Mentor program get off to a good start. It sounds like it would alleviate a lot of the issues that are being complained about.  After all, it really is a LL run program not a resident program. Let them at least have a chance to work out any kinks and make it successful. After all this isn't the past. It's the present.

🤣 Probably a good thing.  I rarely log in nowadays --- more of the mboard junkie!

It probably needs to run for awhile and the Lab can analyze on how it's working and stuff.  And maybe what happened in the past won't seriously repeat itself.

Trip down memory lane - below is one such video released by the VTeam released 2008 at the crux of the issues of the mentor group which still saw it close pretty well much at the end of that year and finally in 2009 for good. Ironically it is to showcase exactly what you said in your first paragraph - act professionally. It didn't help. Older mentors and users warned you of this in previous threads about mentors not having their own dedicated avatars or allowing existing residents there...

History is already repeating itself and the program has just started a few weeks ago. A lot more needs to be done than what is or else history will continue to repeat till the end.

There could be a new last name for the Mentor toons --- like Alfred Mentor or something.....

Mentors are instructed they need to be professional at all times. If you have witnessed any who are not, a better course of action would be to inform Viola. (rather than talking about it on the forums where people like to argue about anything and everything)

That said, we have also heard complaints from Mentors as well who feel some residents enter the Welcome Hub more intent on undermining their efforts by "proving they know more" than actually helping new residents.

I think the Mentor thing probably never been bought back.  It failed before and it's bound to happen again.

As for some residents coming to the Welcome Hub, some were doing that before the Mentor was bought back.

Ah, hand a mentor a bit of power and a badge and this is what happens. The little dictator syndrome raising it's ugly head again like last time? If I were supervising that program, that mentor would be out on their tush without a second goodbye. Mentors need to have to have the patience of a saint and the politeness of my late gran. Telling off helpful regulars isn't the best way the mentor programme needs to get known for.

This is one reason I've not bothered even visiting the WelcomeHub. I need jumped up attitudes like this like I need more stress in my life.

Maybe the Lab will see the Mentor system is not working as intended and put it out to pasture.

Or at least tell the Mentors if a non-Mentor is trying to help --- let it be. We all need to work  together to keep people interested in SL and not drop off after the onboarding process.

She is leaving SL totally because of this one incident? Seems rather an overreaction.

I can see if a mentor is helping a person how it would be irritating for another person to come in and start helping.  If mentors are assigned to the welcome area and they have volunteered I would say that other residents shouldn't get involved.

She's helped in welcome areas before the Mentor program was restored.  But there's some other underlying things she's concerned about  SL and think is looking for an excuse to exit.  As for the Mentor they could've been more gentle in his reply I think. I used to help sometimes --- but it was when I was running a club and sometimes I'd see a zero-day toon land.  One told me he got there from a random TP or something.  Someone told me SL would dump new toons at clubs, but don't know how true is that.

One time I was offering advice in text to one newbie while a mentor was doing the same. The mentor got upset that I was "talking over" him and sent me an IM telling me to stop talking over him and saying I could apply to be a mentor if I wanted to be one. I thought he was being rude to me, but I just replied back with a smile emoticon and stopped talking in text. Meanwhile the newbie I'd been talking to sent me a friend invite, and I accepted it.

Someone told me she went to check the new welcome area and was helping a new person.  She got a PM from a couple Mentors to lay off. She  PMed back only trying to help.  One Mentor got pissed off and told her to leave.  My friend did lodge a ticket explaining what happened and explain she didn't want to be in the Mentor program due to the commitments but just pop in now and then. Now she is thinking heck with them and maybe bail from SL.

Wait till Zucky realizes the metaverse already exists in SL, and he decides to buy it 😂

I think there would be a mass exodus from SL.  I know I'd delete my account and jump the boat --- and just think of the memories.....especially the times when our characters had legs!

No. If I can't see what I'm getting into from a desktop web browser, I'm not interested. Threads.net only taking you to a blank page on Firefox? Hahaha no.

Someone at my RL bar showed me a survey on his phone what was from Meta.  It asked about that devices used to access Fakebook and another question asked if he would stay should it go mobile only.  So far I've seen a few websites go mobile --- including a pharmacy's ordering system up here.

    Never under-estimate an idiot.

He could offer cash money in hand for Linden Lab and really hose it.  "We now allow up 30 minutes a week to go in world, additional time is $3.98 per minute. Welcome to the new SL!"

For me there's no Facebook or any of their related services, no Twitter, no Masterdon or anything else that resembles an endlessly scrolling feed of junk.  Privacy implications aside, I'm just not interested in any of that.  I feel my life is better without it from what I have read about the effects it can have on people with prolonged use.

My point here though is to clarify my previous brief statement that I'm not singling out Threads in any way which could be fabulous for all I know or care.

I avoid socials like the plague.  I did Discord for a bit, but found it annoying as the publisher keeps up-selling their Nitro crap. Closest is mboards like here and many others I'm on. I watched the Lab Gab replay and they mentioned they don't scoop up data like Fakebook does. About shops, etc in world that might be a different story.

Hey guys, I'll stalk..I mean follow you on Threads if you tell me your @.

Anyway, there's no Threads "Website" - just apps? That's interesting and weird.

I understand that "apps are the future" but..jeeze!

    Get off my lawn!

I wish some outfit other then Meta made the Twitter killer.  I trust Meta as far I can throw the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco.

I'm starting to get the feeling we're probably not the intended audience.

I think they're going for a younger user base that has disposable income that they can spend on the game. I watched the replay of the Lab Gab thing and that's the impression I get.

I haven't said much about region crossings in a while.

Server side is still broken. One of the senior Lindens was annoyed at me for bringing it up at Server User Group so often. He said they were working on it.

    That was in 2022.

    It's still broken.

I'm tired of the excuses from LL on this. I've heard five years of excuses for failure now.

In the context of new users, if driving worked reliably, we could have mainland tours for new users. But vehicles with multiple passengers work very badly. Sometimes I try to get people interested in driving. I can't put them in a vehicle and drive around with me without going through a checklist. Low-complexity avatar? Check. Good ping time? Check. Enough network bandwidth? Check. Enough graphics power? Check. Good vehicle? Check. OK, we're good to drive around mainland.

I've started people driving with free cars from one of the shops on Robin Loop. I've seen them hit the region crossing at Neumogen, have the avatar get stuck, and the car kept going, running off the road and into a building. I had someone on the back of my bike recently, and their high-complexity avatar came off at the second region crossing.

    LL people, this is pathetic.

If you don't get this fixed before mobile goes live, you will be laughed at by major reviewers. You cannot launch into the mass market/gamer space like this. You only get one chance to make a bad first impression. You don't think so? Go watch and read game reviews. The tolerance for immersion-breaking failures is zero.

Couldn't the regions be merged into very large ones like used in game type MMOs? You think in this day and age the region crossing issues be solved.

As for the thread's title --- some "games" had quit threads on their board as soon the game was released. :D

Luckily, there's no choice but to make the Mobile client simpler. Hopefully a new "desktop client" will be released as a result, or a client with optiont that let is look like the Mobile client.

Can you imagine if you are a happy Mobile user, then you go to use your PC and can't figure out the client? That won't fly.

I don't even do mobile.  SL would be hard to do on a flip phone!  I'm probably one of 11 people on the planet that don't use a smart phone.
