  1. I am reading a lot about everyone "buying" or "renting" land to call their own. I assume that comes in handy for certain practices but is it absolutely necessary? Is it possible to just run around and listen to all the great music and watch what all the people are doing? I have always been an avid people watcher anyway. I like to sit at those little outdoor cafe's and just watch the people walking up and down the street, seeing how they dress and handle themselves. It's always amazing in certain parts of town. Atlanta is great in various spots. Lots of wild ideas there, almost like being in SL. So, I guess the real question is, what "can't" I do if I don't buy or rent my own place?
  2. Miss Peggy, I read your post and it made me wonder if I am overworking my computer needlessly. This is a one year old laptop, HP Pavilion dv6 with a core i7 and 4GBs of RAM @ 800MHz BS. But I'm running with full areo on. I figured it could handle al the so called "eye candy". But it gets so damn hot when I'm running the viewer. I can barely touch the bottom near the fan. The graphics in it uses an Nvidea GeForce GT 230M, and I guess that's not really upgradable in a laptop. So I was wondering if I should turn off the areo and run strickly performance to get this thing to run a little cooler. Might not make a difference because even though I might open a few browser windows at the same time I'm using the viewer, it doesn't slow down or lag at all, just gets real hot and fan runs at max speed. And I try not to do anything else while the viewer is open. I'm still pretty new at this and just experimenting to see what works best. I appreciate any tips and tricks. This forum is a great place to learn.
  3. For my own reasons, blonde, even though I love them all, just something about blonde.
  4. I'm sorry, it was Leyna who suggested I was in "Basic" mode. And you were right. Didn't notice that when I reinstalled the viewer. All seems well now. All except I'm still not sure what caused the crash, if it was that Kristens viewer or something else I did. But everything seems fine now. Thank you all so much for your help.
  5. I was in "Advanced" mode, but I can't even really blame that Kirstens viewer for the crash. I have a bad habit of not restarting my computer but once a week if I even remember to do that. I just close the lid and let it go to sleep so it restarts instantly. And I had done something foolish. I installed a temp file cleaner, updated my video card for possible better 3D rendering, and installed that Kirstens viewer, all without having to restart. And all was fine until I was on SL and had an ugly log-out and unexpected computer shutdown. Upon restart, no video at all, just a black screen. I got video in safe mode and tried rolling back the video adapter driver, deleting it, and everything else I could think of. Still, black screen, or no monitor at all half way through boot-up. It wouldn't even let me get as far as my password. The monitor comes on initially but goes black or shuts off on the middle of the POST. Took an entire reformat and reinstall to fix it. Now all is back to normal and actually working better. Less bloat with a reinstall. And I keep very good backups so nothing was lost. But now that you mention it, I know I was in advanced when the crash occured but I could have restarted everything in basic. I just deleted the viewer and reinstalled it from this website a few minutes ago. haven't even tried it yet. And I have a feeling you are right on Mayalily, I was probably in basic mode. I think I'll play it safe for a bit and stick with that V2 until this new MESH gets tested pretty good. This is a high-end laptop with a core i7 and 4GB of RAM but I'm not sure the video is that great. Just an Nvidea GeForce GT 230M. When I was checking for updated drivers, it was at the bottom of the list even though this laptop is only a year old. But SL is too much fun. I have to find a stable platform to play on. And I really appreciate everyone's suggestions, thank you
  6. I tried that Kirstens? viewer, worked okay for a few hours then something nuked my video. Had nothing but a black screen unless I booted into safe mode. Took me all day to fix that. Now I'm using the basic SL viewer, the first one I downloaded but something is weird, I don't have access to my inventory or anything. No "Move" button on the bottom either. I think I need an update or something.
  7. Most excellent information. I am still playing, and LEARNIG a lot. Just building the right avi takes time and patience which has always been one of my problems. But now, I think it's fun to slow down and try different things. I really appreciate the link to the list of viewers. I have to try each one for a while to see how it benifits what I like. But, just as a possible forum concensus, which viewer might be best at giving you a very detailed view of yourself when you turn around to look at your makeup and such?
  8. That actually sounds like a pretty decent rig. The last desktop I built was a P4 3.2 and a great graphics card but the whole system ran at max temp playing SL. So I gave up on SL years ago. I'm basically starting over, wow, things are different. But I got a laptop with a core i7 & 4GBs and an Nvidia GT 230M video card. I honestly believe it takes a lot more than just the video card to get everything moving. Rendering 3D graphics is important, but if you consider loading time, you need everything working together. This laptop doesn't even hesitate with SL running behind half a dozen browser windows. Prices are falling and by this Xmas, I expect them to be nearly giving them away.
  9. I am still trying to find my way here because it's been less than a week but I am amazed at how helpful everyone is. This is an awesome environment. I have learned a ton just from reading through everyone's comments. I just have to thank everyone for making this such a great place.
  10. Thank you so much Mila, you're awesome! I'll check out your store.
  11. Hello all, I don't seem to be able to add any kind of avatar to my status on this forum. I'm not sure what I'm missing but when I go to [My Settings] up above for this forum, and select the "Avatar" tab, all the sugestion boxes have those little blue circles with the diagonal line drawn through them like my computer won't download any of them. I turnned off all my spam filters and made sure my AVG firewall isn't blocking anything from SL but to no avail. Is there something specific I should remove from the restricted zone or am I just doing something completely wrong?
  12. Thank you so much Tristizia, I don't know why I didn't see that before. This time, I looked at [Preferences] before I logged in. I don't know if that matterss but I found it. I'm sure that will save me a lot of grief. I do that with Windows updates too. So, anyway, being really new, I have nothing to compare my viewer to. All I can say is that it is version 2.8.1 as of Aug 4, 2011. I don't understand the "naming" convention people are using here to refer to different viewers. Seems to work fine but then again, how would I know. But I am so amazed at how helpful everyine is. This is such a cool thing to do. I only wish I had more time.
  13. Awh, Mila, you're so sweet, thank you again. Even though I played around with SL back in it's humble beginnings, it quickly out-grew the computer I was using so I consider myself a brand new newbie as of a couple days ago. And I have no idea how to interconnect these web pages in my browser to the SL environment. But that barrel looks awfully useful in a pinch. So far, I've been flying up to the top of some remote building or someplace like that. Seems very private and even gives me that tiny twinge of exibitionism fix. So now, it a matter of shopping. Trying to find the exact right shoes to match the outfit and stuff. It seems like it hard to find things all in one place so I'm doing a lot of searching. And computer searches have never been my strong suite.
  14. Thank You Marianne, I just have the one, that's probably enough for me to keep up with for now. But I did just get a message box telling me that SL automatically downloaded some update. I have been looking for where to turn that off but haven't found it yet.
  15. It is funny how much reality we apply to this. Almost as if our avi was as important as our reality is. To some, maybe it is, and it sure is a lot of fun looking at it that way. I think this is going to be a blast.
  16. I finally got to wear my pink Fairy costume. Now I have to go shopping for some matching shoes. These red stilettos don't cut it.
  17. Thanks Mila, Yeah, it's weird but it's like I don't want to dress in front of anyone so I find these remote areas to change. I hope people don't hate me when they figure out who I really am though. I still have issues with that because I don't know if I started out with the riight kind of AVI.
  18. WOW!, I finally look a little more real. My feet don't even stick out of my shoes. This is so cool!
  19. YOU guys are AWESOME! I came back to ask these very questions and youve already answered them for me. I feel like i owe you all a great deal already. That makes me feel like a heel for not revealing my true self yet. But I guess my profile is the right place to do that. I wish I had more time to devote to this. it's a lot of fun. But I have to squeeze it in where I can. And that thing about keeping things "orderly", I can see how that can get out-of-hand real quick. I've already been deleting things like crazy.
  20. Just a little followup, because basically, I don't have any other viewers to compare this one to at the moment. But I suppose that will come with time. But I noticed a [check-box] in the set-up that said [Allow Multiple viewers]. Any idea why this would be a benefit?
  21. Thank you, sounds silly now, but I had no clue what to do. I REALLY appreciate the help. That will give me something to work on. ;-)
  22. Thank you, that sounds like very good advice.
  23. Another newbie question. I'm buying these clothes, dresses or costumes, not sure really how to tell the difference yet, and some of them just stick to my hand as a cube instead of allowing me to "dress" in them. I bought a skin, that's another story, uneditable, but nice enough, and I don't know if this particular skin doesn't let me do or wear certain things. I really need to find some proper clothing to represent what I'm about to reveal. But it seems I need to learn how to get dressed first. Is there something specific I should look for when I buy clothing to make sure that I can wear them after I buy them? I am afraid a couple things I bought are listed as "objects" but I'm not sure. For example, I bought this one outfit or, what I thought was an outfit called Fairytail from 1DELUXE or IDELUXE and it says (no moodify) (no transfer) next to it. The store was listed as Womemswear & menswear Sanibell Island. I don't why, but when I right-click it and select "wear", it just attaches to my right hand as a cube. It was a really cute outfit in the display window. But I can't swear it was a wearable outfit. I guess i have a lot to learn.
