ok honestly I know there is this machinima policy but if you film a crowd in an event - is someone really going to pipe up and say they was me i didn't give permission? In RL we have what is called the expectation of privacy. If you are out in public you have no expectation of privacy. If you don't film the name tags who is going to complain..... I know this policy was put in to try to cut down on the trolling videos, but the whole idea that video needs a different set of permissions vs photos is a bit silly. ..

You have a mid range mobile edition GPU and a CPU that's 4 generations old limited to PCIE 3.0

I have a desktop - 700w 'Gold' power supply too

thanks Rowan - interesting other than the newer CPU everything else is similar except you on a laptop yet getting 2 to 3 times the FPS, Maybe I just need some WD40 to loosen up the joints lol

I have no problem with 40+ avatars using the Firestorm PBR viewer. However, I do have shadows turned off unless I'm doing a photo. That's the only thing that will push my fps down and even then, it's consistently around 40fps with shadows and 80-90 without. Â
what hardware is that? I have a i7-10700k, a 3070, 32gig ram and all m2 SSD and with 'everything on' in a crowded event maybe 10-16fps - empty sims or a few people no problem but it is always the large amount of avi's that drop the FPS like a rock! just reading about the new PBR it seems like that rock is gonna get even bigger
-
as it is now, even good hardware cannot overcome the 40+ avatars at an event - and it looks like we are being told it will only get worse from here........

It does work in all viewers I have tried although FS works best primarily, for me at least, a couple of features: input a number for feathering. I keep mine at .05 for filming work, and getting it that low with just a slider is hard and then the cam controls in the phototools panel. I use the left button to both turn off the UI and to activate the flycam for everyday filming use this is how I keep it set

Retention is never good for free to play games.
https://www.mistplay.com/resources/mobile-game-retention-benchmarks
I know it's mobile but still, it's pretty relevant. Look, 30 day retention rate is 3% on average. Retention isn't an SL problem, it's a free to play problem. And SL retention is never going to be high when it's free to play and people see what it costs to make an attractive AV.
Free to play retention rates are also very low because there's no risk in trying a F2P game. It's just a download to see if you like it. And yes, sorry for calling SL a game 😅
One could 'play' SL free forever, and Linden wouldn't make a penny, Linden is counting on new users to stick around and start spending money on shopping, maybe buying land, maybe become a premium member. Linden's issue seems to be new users never return. Learning how to use the UI, where to go, what to do, making friends all that - I just don't think a mobile app will solve

I doubt a mobile app will bring in more new users when the the majority of new users on the existing platform never come back

again one of those well intentioned things that doesn't always work out properly. I do weddings, and alot of wedding are on private sim, often with a A rating, and alot of wedding have children - flower girls and ring bears, along with sometimes just children of the guests

My solution was to turn on custom port in network on firestorm and also if you use amd cpu turn off fptm in bios
Tho the second fix has to be done exacly as this article decribes or u can get locked out of windows.
Here is a bullatin by amd reguarding it
https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/PA-410.html
Â
I don't have a AMD processor but is the custom port? you have numbers or specs for that? I have 500 up and down so I'm really not thinking it is bandwidth bottleneck issue - but might as well try if I can
Âand I've learned long ago don't F around in bios lol

the stutter is in the GPU graph - the valley is the 'freeze" on screen the the peak is where things are moving again. Stop, start, stop, start. Other wise, wasn't much lag, it was pretty smooth for a fairly crowded event - about 25fps or so. I dunno maybe it's just a Windows thing. Next time I will record the scene on video
-
I know this been discussed alot here - i have a screen shot from the task manager that shows exactly the stutter. I still don't know why it does this

Seems they've improved efficiency a lot since my GTX 1080 then; perhaps another reason I should consider upgrading. Mine can certainly help keep a room warm, and overheat it if we get a warm summer spell; unfortunately very rare for the last 10 years. Previous to that, there were times over the summer I couldn't bare to run the PC during the day because the room just got too hot and that was with a GTX 960 in the previous rig.
Idle, with Firestorm minimised and just this web browser up, the GPU is at 52W. This is it at the fair about 30 seconds after TP'ing in. I saw a peak at 137W while turning around.
Â
Yes the RTX can be more efficient and run cooler - but this is why also is a good Idea to set a FPS limit, no need to for the GPU to be cranked at 100% all the time. I keep min at 32 fps, more than enough for a smooth experience in SL when everything is going good (that is with the shaders and shadows on)

1200-1500 build your own PC will be good for SL. SL is diminishing return too I recently rebuilt my system I did back in 2012 and went from a gtx1080 to a rtx 3070, Barely a difference in FPS performance But because I do alot of video was worth it for rendering. Point is you don't need to get to crazy to build a decent machine for SL

in Windows I remember there is a 'game mode' in the settings - I cannot recall the exact thing, but I had a newer system and was having alot the same issues and it turned out to be something to do with game mode settings. It is a bit fuzzy for me but I seem to remember also i had to turn off (I think) Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. In any case, sometimes in crowded sims, SL still does the stutter and I can visually see it in the task manager monitoring the GPU graphÂ
If you are seeing this recording, at least in OBS, you can monitor to see if you are getting rendering lag or encoding lag. Lately, for some reason, I been getting at random times extreme encoding lag even though nothing has changed in my hardware, software or settings. I also use the FPS limiter in FS set to 32

I can remember even after having had a verified paypal account for over a decade, when Tillia came around I had to get get 're verified' which included among other things, dancing on one leg in a pink sock while the other was wearing blue, naming each of my 10 toes and the reason I chose those names, identifying 100 different species of birds along with naming the last 200 transactions on Linden, the exact amount and the reason for them. Sure would hate to go through all that all over again!

One other way, if I'm recording video. is to make my AV invisible, and use my arrow keys to move around. But it's not easy.
shift+alt+ctrl+4 - turn off all avatars - including yourself

i know it is way off topic from the top post, but since we also talking about recording video i did a simple OBS tut a bit back

Lower draw distance, increase LOD (usually Object in graphics settings). Best way for higher image quality with better performance. And disable MSAA. It kills my performance when there's alpha masked textures, like plants.
Draw distance is huge, look at this area of a circle calculator
https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/circle-area.html
Notice how area goes from 804 at 32m view distance to 3216 at 64m view distance. That area is all filled with stuff your computer needs to render, download, etc. The less area your computer has to render stuff, the less it has to render (most of the time, there are exceptions) so the better it's going to run.
OK I should clarify. I am looking at this from the perspective of creating video in world. Lowering draw distance is not always an option, Turning off Dynamic Draw helps keeps things rezzed but it can really degrade performance. And MSAA - Im not even sure that is.

all these devs in the comments here melting my brain with technical explanations. Â Are there any good debug setting we can set to increase visual performance? I remember back in the old days there was settings like MeshTriangles or something and Triangle-something, damn i can't remember them now, but is there anything someone with a 'powerful enough' computer can do to, when it comes to tweaking debug settings, to improve visual performance?
-
or. it could be the case with the official viewer - why bother? if you really really want to defender something - just use Firestorm

and of course, in the 'old days' - pre 2021, LS could be a little side hustle, money for gas, some groceries , but now - anything more than 600 bucks, in the USA, you get in a for instance, PayPal account, is reported to the IRS - so now, those measly scraps of Lindens you did get, you now get the pleasure of reporting it and potentially owing taxes on it!

Scotty - I need more RAM!!!!Â
32 gig RAM is really minimum nowadays. And not just any RAM - buy the fastest you can afford

Thrashing has been around for a long time and while mostly 'fixed' sometimes in some places it is really bad. And soon even video cards with 12g vRAM won't be enough in SL!
