When you start the viewer it will pick the best graphics settings for your video card... sort of.

Figuring out the best settings for your system and the viewer is a shaky thing. Settings vary depending on a load of various factors. So, no one is going to just have a reciepe for your computer.

The SL Viewer does use multiple threads. There are some debug settings you can enable to make sure all the multi-threading possible is in use. Look in Graphics Tweaking for Second Life. Scroll down to Multi-threading for information on what it is and where some settings are. There is more information on page 5 of a more hardware oriented article: Faster SL.

The Debug Values in most viewers are:

  • CurlUseMultipleThreads - Use background threads for executing curl_multi_perform (requires restart).
  • RenderAppleUseMultGL – Whether we want to use multi-threaded OpenGL on Apple hardware (requires restart of SL). — There is no information on whether this has any affect on a Windows machine. I would suppose not.
  • RunMultipleThreads – If TRUE keep background threads active during render – Default = False. — There is little information on this setting. What I have found is that setting this item to true hands off texture decompression to multiple threads, which can run in other processors cores. It improves performance.
