Right now we know very little of what the Lab is planning. For some time there has been discussion about creating a new Avatar 2.0, which would be an early step in having better clothes and avatars. Unfortunately that will break a lot of content. Therefore there is lots of resistance to such a change, both from residents and the Lab.

The Mesh Deformer project that will allow a better mesh clothes fit to the existing avatar is in testing and being developed. It is working pretty well. You can see where we are with that project and mesh in general in this series of articles: Mesh Stuff. There is a Linden Project viewer with the mesh Deformer. Most Third Party Viewers (TPV) have the Deformer with an on/off switch, which makes it easy to test clothes.

We see new features move farther into the future the more complex the projects are. Linden Realms Tools, Direct Delivery, and Last Names are in the works now. A material system that may give us bump/normal mapping MAY be in the pipeline. As simple as those seem to many of us, their are lots of complexities that have to be handled.

But, it is hard to know what the Lindens are thinking until they tell us.
