If you're running into problems installing the Linux version of the LL viewer, read >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linux_Viewer to see if your problem is addressed.

If you're having problems installing the Firestorm viewer for Linux, the equivalent set of instructions is here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_compiling_firestorm_32bit_ubuntu

By comparing the two sets of instructions, you may get insights that would not be apparent if you just study one of them.

You don't need to install SL in Linux per se. Second Life Linux can run directly from the directory you have unpacked it to, so simply download the tarball and extract it to your home folder. From there you can start second life by running ./secondlife from the installation directory or better yet add a menu or launcher in whatever method your distro allows and/or you prefer.

Also make sure you have all proprietary drivers installed, SL may not work if you don't have them installed.
