Groar!! Just started but stuck in destination picker page whenever I open second life application?

So, as far as I gather I should be able to at least see my avatar and basic functions. 

Which I don't.

Instead, I see all the different destinations..

The destination guide is on the log in screen.  You haven't logged in until you put in your user name and password and then click the log in button.........or, if you want to go to one of the destinations in the guide, you can click on the one you want to go to (you still must log in though).  Once you're logged into SL you'll see your avatar and and the user interface.  You won't see anything like your avatar or the UI until you log in.

If you have Downloaded a Viewer, your login screen should look like this :
