It would be nice if LL could figure a way to do all the number crunching and video processing in a cloud system (or even have the server for each region do it) and just stream us the video.

I can't really think of how a mobile app would be much use in experiencing SL and /or benefit the economy of SL.

Having an app that deals only with the social networking aspect of SL makes sense. Creating a full-blown graphics viewer for an iOS device, while it may be done, may also possibly run afoul of the Apple App Store policies and thus never make it to fruition. Anything that has adult sexual activity is pretty much verbotten under the Apple policiies which would rule out any fully graphical SL viewer app being made available in that venue.

The only way to install apps on an iOS device is via the App store (unless the user of the device jailbreaks it... but then Apple catches that and installs a patch that either bricks the device or makes it nearly impossible for the broken device to reconnect to the App store).

I could see a fully graphical app available on the Android platform though.

Because video uses huge, huge bandwidth. The way it works now is that only positional data is sent to and from a viewer, the physics is sorted on LL servers, then the results along with the textures are sent to your viewer, which then assembles the picture. This means minimal data is sent through the system, and it still gets laggy. Mobile devices do not have the same high speeds as landline broadband, generally less powerful processors and graphics, and most of the viewer is based on Java, and so the device needs strong Java support too, along with being able to use the many open source libraries and QuickTime for video and sound streaming.

It might be possible to do what you say, but you'd be lucky to get a framerate of even 1fps lol.
