There are many reasons for that very common problem. What works for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilitites here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today.

There are lots of reasons. There are also a number of quick fixes. To work your way through the list see: Avatar Render Problems: Ghost Cloud Smoke Ball Ruth.

The basic cause is a clothing or body part that is failing to download or decompress correctly. An easy fix is to clear your cache. Since you didn't give us any information about your system we have to make guesses and give you generic suggestions. Next time click Help->About and copy/paste that info into your post.

The cache clear button is in the top menu under  Me->Preferences->Advanced. It requires a viewer restart.

A repetitive problem usually means a bad connection or a bad item, like hair. Test your connection on SpeedTest.net. Also open the viewer stats (CTR-Shift-1 - a toggle) and look at ping and lost packets. Ping <= 250 and Packer Loss 0% are ideal. You can connect with worse values but at some point you start to have problems.

Bad items are uncommon but they exist. All images in SL are stored in a compressed format. SL uses a proprietary program (KDU) to do the compression and decompression. While it was being upgraded and third party viewers were working on an open source version a number of files with problems got uploaded. A time about 1% of files failed to decompress correctly. If you have the misfortune to have one of those in a body or clothing item it can cause problems.

The fix is to start changing items on your avatar. Some think reverting to the Test Character is the best answer. I think it is a last resort.

Quick fixes are; change your active group, re-bake your avatar (Ctrl-Alt-R), visit a deserted region - clear your cache - relog directly into the deserted region (Pooley is often deserted) - allow inventory to reload, while in a deserted region triple re-bake giving a minute between rebakes and change your Bald.
