What is name display? How does it work, and what's the reason why u can't change your account name?

Display names is a way to display a different name for your avatar.

You cannot change your account name because it is uniquely associated with all your inventory and assets stored on the servers.  If you need a new account name, then you need to create a new account.

You can't change your Social Security Number  in RL either (unless you're in the witness protection program :smileytongue:).  A unique username makes it easier to verify who you are when you log in, when you buy something, or if you have been violating TOS.  Display names are like nicknames -- friendly and convenient, but people can change them every week.   Especially in a world where you can't count on identifying a person by her appearance, it's important to have some feature that you can be sure will never change.
