I just bought an hp laptop and sl wont work on it. I need to know if there is a laptop that is not over 500 USD thyat will run SL.

Probably not, but there may be surprises out there. Once you get past the minimum requirements for memory and processor speed (which aren't trivial), the quality of your SL experience depends largely on how good your graphics card is.  Most laptops -- certainly most inexpensive laptops -- don't have separate graphics cards, just onboard graphics chips.  The lower the price, in general, the lower the quality.  If you intend to spend much time in SL, it's worth saving your money until you can afford a machine that you won't spend all your time cursing at.

You have eliminated all possible options.  Take a look at the T or W series Thinkpads and expect to drop about twice that much minimum for a SL-capable notebook.
