Unfortunately, "average" is a hard thing to quantify in SL.  For some types of people, very realistically sized avatars are "average" and that makes sense; however, in SL it really isn't the majority.  Most guy avis that I see are translate to something like 8' tall.  You can wear things that contain as few prim parts as possible, but I'm sure you've noticed they don't usually look quite as good.  There's really not much you can do about having to edit things, I guess is what I'm saying.  The only advice I can really give you is try not to be too overly muscular or too skinny.  That's as close to "average" as I think you can manage and should save you some time.

I'm afraid it's hard to find cuz most designers make clothes according to their own shape. In sl there is no so called unified standard. I make 3 types of shapes for each skin line and in my shop best selling shapes are the biggest ones (abt 2.35m ~ 2.40m) and more than 50% of my customers go for them. The smallest ones are about 2.10m ~ 2.24m.

I agree with what the others are saying. It is really no standard in SL, designers build for any frame they like. That's part of the beauty, you find something for absolutely all.

But I understand it can be a pain. Do you have any particular brand of clothing that you prefer? I know that the fantasy designer Vigo creations (Medieval) has 2 boxes of free shapes in his mainstore. One for female, one for male. That's good customer service. Their clothing has many sculpted details. If you like clothes made for big, heroic charachters, you could try to pick up the box of male shapes.

A few years ago, LeLook gave out complete avatars. The male one had an Aoharu jacket. I am not sure if that shape is still available. (Aoharu has a 50% off sale now) I would guess that it was easy to fit Aoharu clothes to this one.

Updated:  The shape is still out, but it's not free anymore. It cost 250L, that isn't so bad? TP to
