There are a range of Name2Key services w-hat.com seemd to the best known. BlackDB is one that has been posted here in the script library forum - I haven't tested this one. I hve worked quite frequently with w-hat.com and the results were quite good - maybe not as good as you would like it for a gift service (about 97%). I would advice you to have buyers provide the key instead

it's possible to retrieve most keys manually by navigating to the name page for the SL avatar, and reading the key from the tools menu dropdown.

unless you have an external app or host (w/ PHP and cURL for instance)  that can handle a cookie driven login to it you'll have to do that part manually, but it's a good backup to any database which might not have the key needed.

ETA:
since you are using chat parsing, these functions may help....

Darn good question, Beverly.  That's one of the many reasons I dislike and avoid display names.  If I make a vendor that is going to offer a gift option, I will include a clear messaage that says "Type the full USERNAME of the person you want the gift sent to (No Display Names, please)" and then I will do an immediate check to see if the name they have entered is a username.  It might even be a good idea to send a confirming message to say either "Please check to be sure that this is the right person >>> http://my.secondlife.com/firstname.lastname" or "Sorry, I could not find a person with that username."

For most of what I write, the person needs to be nearby, I will store the key, the realname and the display name.

I will use display name for hovertext and dialog, but for comparisions it will be the key, and in the event of dispute i will produce the reall name.

eg; they select Julie from the dialog, my key doesnt match the Julie that is nearby, so iI can then pop up a message saying i mean this Julie and give the reall name.

Oh, yes.  If the giftee is nearby it's a no-brainer.  Your system is great, because it forces the buyer to confirm exactly which person she wants to give the product to, from a list.  My more general suggestion was for the case where the intended giftee is at a distance.  There too, I want to put the burden of verifying the giftee's identity on the buyer's shoulders, not my own, just as you have..

Thanks for all the suggestions guys im gona go with the same thinking as Darkie, people will have to use the key then its very nice n clear and reliable.  And as its so easy to find out a key i cant see it being a problem, il then have a key2name to confirm with buyer who they are sendind the gift to.  Yes the new display names are a pain i look at my friends list and forget whos who most the time lmao :)
