The gender of your avatar is determined by the "Shape" that you are wearing.

The male & female shapes have a few different settings from each other, so you cannot effectively edit one into the other.

Just find a male shape in one of the stock folders in the library and edit that one to how you want to look.

As addition to Peewee's answer: Of course there is a switch in the shape appearance editor where you can select if the shape is male or female.
