i am new to making clothes and wanted to do some system clothing for bom or appliers and i am stuck with the obj or dae  3D avatar in photoshop since the 3D option doesn't work anymore. there seems to be a temporary work around by going to edit>preferences>Technology previews, check Deactivate native canvas and restart photoshop. but this is temporary till they remove the whole feature from photohop.  so i read about other options and is anyone familiar with these programs?

yup a whole lot of us are affected by this change in what is no longer in Photoshop.  Many of us are outraged at the fact that we are now paying full price for something that has become less than it was before..  as for Substance a whole new program(s) that they are charging for another subscription price..  It sucks but we have a choice as to whether to pay for yet another subscription and continue to pay for a lesser Photoshop program or find something else for 3D.. There are many many comments on the Photoshop forums regarding this.  If you only need for 3D and  rigging might I suggest Blender, as I know a lot of folks in SL use it.  Personally I use ZBrush to create in 3D, but I still need Blender to rig as ZBrush does not offer that ability or allow for saving in .dae format.  And I must admit, for me it is more bother than I am willing to put into it so I just quit making my own mesh.

If you're looking for apps that are focused purely on texturing then Substance Painter is definitely the most popular option, but other than the fact it uses layers & masks it doesn't really bear a lot of resemblance to Photoshop.

Personally I'd recommend trying 3D Coat instead...

It has full support for PBR texturing and a range of other features that rival Substance Painters toolset, and will be far more familiar to Photoshop users since it shares several similar features (you can even import your favourite Photoshop brushes into 3D Coat in standard .ABR format and use them there).  Plus, if you find there's some things you can only do in Photoshop or you feel more comfortable working in an app you're familiar with while learning how to use 3D Coat, not only is there a handy bridge function that lets you swap seamlessly between working in 3D in 3D Coat and working in 2D in Photoshop while preserving all the individual layers that you're working on, it also allows you to export a 2D snapshot of your 3D model to Photoshop where you can paint details using all the regular Photoshop tools, then when you export those changes back to 3D Coat they're automatically projected onto the models surface as if you'd painted them directly onto the model itself.

Aside from being an amazing tool for texturing 3D models, 3D Coat also has a full suite of high poly sculpting tools (very similar to those available in Zbrush), a low poly modelling room and arguably the best retopology tools currently available in any 3D app.  It has an export constructor feature which allows you to automatically compile all your texture maps into the correct channels for use with SL materials.  It even allows the importing and exporting of SL sculpt maps which makes texturing existing sculpted prims so much simpler as well as allowing you to easily convert them to mesh.

It also has multiple licensing options including perpetual licenses and a rent to own option, just in case you'd rather own your software rather than being forced to pay for it monthly/yearly for the rest of your life.

Oh and not that it's at all relevant to the functionality of the software but Pilgway, the company responsible for 3D Coat, is a Ukranian company so you also get to show your support in some small way, as the lead developer recently said on Twitter...

like above already mentioned. substance painter would be the main 3d painting program. it's the industry standard. I also made 2 substance tutorials specifically aimed for SL as we have to do a few things "backwards" in Substance to make it work for SL

If all the OP is looking for is a texturing app then Substance Painter is probably going to be the best choice due to the amount of free substances/materials available for it and the number of tutorials.  However if the $15 monthly subscription is out of their price range and they're looking for a cheaper alternative purely for texturing then Pilgway also produce an app called 3DCoatTextura which is aimed exclusively at PBR texturing, etc. and, like 3D Coat, comes with perpetual license and rent-to-own options.

When buying/learning any new 3D app it's worth trying demos and familiarizing yourself with how the alternatives compare and which you feel most comfortable using before committing time and money to any one of them, especially considering the amount of time that you need to invest to fully learn to use a 3D application.
