smiles.  Welcome to SL.  You can not 'build' on a Linden home.  If you want you can select another style home with two floors.  You do this by AboutLand> abandon.  Then go back to the web and reselect a different style.

Decorating, colors, finishes, etc  a Linden home is done through the control panel in each linden home.

Furnishing is a different issue.  Have you been shopping for furniture, yet?  When you purchase a chair at a store and you bring it back to your home - you drag the object from your inventory to a 'spot' where you want this object.  Use the edit function to move, rotate, size the object.

Have fun

Hi there!

In addition to Storm's excellent answer there is a way you can  put in a second floor.  You can rezz a prim, stretch it out, add a texture(brick, wood, tile )  to it thereby creating a 'floor'. You can then place it halfway between the floor and the ceiling to create a second floor. For awhile I was living in  a steampunk dockhouse which was very tall and added a second floor in this way. There are many building tutorials if you search the  SL videos or even on youtube.

Then again, just choosing a different Linden home syle, one with 2 floors already, might be easier :)

Have fun!

Hello Estrambotica. With few words for a second floor in your lindens homes you need in fact just 2 prims. 1 for a platform (this will be the second floor) and 1 for a ramp (this will be to go up the second floor without jumping). Also you need to know some basic things about building. It is preferable to change your linden home and get another with 2 floors as Storm suggested.
