sound volume

Low sound volume is a common complaint in SL. There's no way to play sounds louder than 1.0, so you have to boost the amplitude before importing.

At a minimum, every sound file should be normalized, meaning that the loudest passage in the clip should be made nearly as loud as possible. Normalize does this.

If that's not enough, compressing the loud portions of the clip so you can boost the softer portions should help.

Both Normalize and Compressor are functions of my go-to free sound editor, Audacity.

I have seen some gestures which play the same sound multiple times on top of each other. It's a bad problematic (echo) practice, but it does seem to work to a degree.
