Highlighting in Edit

so, i have an problem with different viewers i have tried.

when i select an mesh object, it's not highlighted around the object, the complete object is highlighted. i can see all the triangles like here

how can i change that?

That is how edit of any mesh object has always looked to me.

I'll definitely be interested in what setting might change that.
