The best beginner tutorials are on Natalia Zelmanov's blog.  They are well-illustrated and carefully laid out, and she has a good conversational sense of humor.  Once you get started making clothes, you ought to start posting any questions to the Texturing forum, since most clothing questions (including the one you started this thread with) are texturing questions, not building ones.
