Question

Hey all,

I've been having issues with SL recently. Namely, when I try and launch the client I get the two quick messages "Detecting Hardware" and "Initializing VFS" and then that's as far as it ever gets. At first I tried restarting the computer, and then reinstalling the viewer. Once those didn't work I attempting downloading different viewers but I had an identical problem with Firestorm. From doing a little research it seemed like this was a driver issue, but all of my drivers are currently up to date. I tried reinstalling them just in case but that didn't seem to help so I'm at a bit of a loss.

The driver is this:

GeForce Game Ready Driver Version 451.67

Computer specs are like this:

OS Name    Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Version    10.0.18363 Build 18363
System Type    x64-based PC

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER

Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3192 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    16.0 GB
Total Physical Memory    15.9 GB
Available Physical Memory    9.19 GB
Total Virtual Memory    23.9 GB
Available Virtual Memory    15.3 GB
Page File Space    8.00 GB

I gotta be missing something.

I don't know about the 2070 and SL specifically, but...

  • My older GeForce 980 handles shadows well, but shadows will give you a very noticeable hit in the frame rate, with any graphics card.
  • The new ray tracing ability of the RT series cards is useless in terms of SL.
  • Don't under any circumstances upgrade right now.  The new 30XX series being released over the next four weeks all have much better price to performance ratios.  MUCH better.
