You don't need an advanced pack. On the login screen, next to user name and password, under mode, you can choose advanced instead of basic. It's free. The best way to make money is to buy some. If you really want a job though, see the other suggestions.

You make money in basic mode in many of the same ways that you do in advanced mode.

However - you have no L$ display, no transactions, no inventory, can only walk, fly, chat, IM, accept teleport offers, change to one of the preset avatars and teleport to one of the preset destinations.

In short, you can't buy anything and even if you could you wouldn't be able to use it or wear it.  So there isn't much point in making money.  In any case you shouldn't even think about money for several weeks, explore SL and some of the freebies on offer first.
