i purchased a premium membership with the right to own 8K sqm of land, but when I try to bid in land auction I get a message that I must have a premium membership

from the auction FAQ:

Can anyone in Second Life buy land in the auctions?

No. Only residents that have Premium memberships and are at least 14 days old are eligible to participate in auctions.

Your Premium membership actually lets you 'own' any size land that you are willing to pay for - though you only get a tier allowance of 1024 sqm.
