You can't "exchange" an avatar, but you can just wear a different one.  Use the AVATAR button on your task bar, or pick one that you have saved in your inventory.

You can also go shopping and buy a complete avatar or buy the components separately.  Components are shape, skin, eyes, hair.  Then go buy clothes for your new avi.

I recommend buying the components separately so you don't look like everyone else that bought the complete avatar. 

There are plenty of free avatar components about too so you don't have to spend money if you don't have it to spend.
