you dón't have to delete your account, but you can.

think also bout this : ... just let it be where it is costs nothing, and you can use/return to it at any moment in the future.

In a very real sense, you can't.  You can click the "Delete account" button but the olny thing it does is prevent you from logging on.  At any time in the future you can have it reactivated.  This is because the account still exists and that account name can never be used again by anyone other than you.

To turn off an unused account all you need to do is make sure it is a basic account and just walk away. 

You can "delete" the account but again, the only difference between this and walking away is needing to pay 10 US dollars to log on again in the future.
