I just joined and am a total newbie - how do i modify/change/accessorize my avatar without spending andy linden $?

put your mouse cursor on your avatar and right click! 

menu of things opens and off you go changing things with lots of options.

In addition to searching freebie stores inworld, open up the Marketplace https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ and start searching for free shape, free hair, free skin, free clothes etc. Also try Promo as quite often creators give away some nice things as a free promotional offer. Using only Marketplace, I was able to put together a very nice avatar as an experiment for absolutely nothing. Join some clothing store groups that have a habit of giving away free group offers and tour around the large shopping malls looking for stores giving away free enticement gifts.

As well as the excellent advice you've been given already, you could try to do some hunts! There are plenty of them, and most of them provide hunt gifts for free. Hunts are good fun, and you get to know lots of stores you might want to check out later.
