how many accounts can one have in second life?

There used to be rules about it. When I came, an extra account cost $5. I have one of those. Then it changed to no charge but with a maximum of 5. I don't think that was ever enforced because I've had about 40 for years.

If you are creating an extra account, it's an alt. All your accounts are alts if you have more than one. You can treat them all as 'main' accounts, of course, and you can provide RL money for each one. Some people have started with a main and an alt, and gradulally they changed around, so that what was an alt is now the main, and vice versa.

There are no mains or alts.  Every account is just an account.  You are allowed to create 5 accounts per email account with no limit to the number of email accounts you can have,

All of these accounts are separate, use their own L$ balance, set there own G,M,A ratings etc.

 

It does not take any sort of intuitive leap to realize one could create accounts faster than they can be banned.  You will often here older residents say that free accounts were the death of Second Life.  You don't have to agree with that statement to understand why they feel that way.
