I suppose it all depends on how you know them.  If you know them in RL, ask what login name they use in SL.  Then send an IM to that name.  It's even easier if you already know their in-world name.  The only truly hard one is when you know that a RL friend must be somewhere in SL but she doesn't want to tell you what name she's using here. (For example, I never tell any RL friends that I am Rolig Loon and I never tell my SL friends who I am in RL, so that's the unsolvable problem I present to all of them.)
