There are two main sources of what you can experiance as lag:

1. Your connection. Second Life requires a stable, fast and relieable internetconnection, because everything you see is constantly streamed from the server to your viewer.

2. Your computer. Second Life has quite some demand in terms of hardware. A computer build for only casual internet use or office tasks will struggle with it. Lowering your graphic setting might help.

Here is a link to the wiki with more information about what can cause lag and how to deal with it: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/How_to_reduce_lag

Of course, this all guessing on my side, because your post doesn't include much information. Adding details about your connection or computer hardware could help. You can edit your question under "Options" on the right side.

In addition to the link that Syo suggested, you might also get ideas from

The basic challenge is that Second Life is largely user-created, unlike on-line games that you may be familiar with, most of which are created by professionals.  Most of the creations in SL are therefore not optimized for rapid, clean rendering.  Not only that, but residents are continually creating and updating content, so absolutely nothing is static.  Your viewer has to maintain a streamed connection with Linden Lab servers, updating 45 times a second. If you have a good computer and a solid Internet connection, you should be able to get at least 30 FPS -- more than that in regions that are not very busy or overloaded with things that tax the physics engine. (I routinely get 60 - 70 FPS in quiet regions.)  If your computer is less than optimal, or if you have a flaky connection, you can expect lower FPS.

ETA:  Linden Lab does not recommend wireless or satellite Internet connections.  Many people have no problem at all with them, but you can experience increased ping time and thus greater lag.
