In addition to Madelaine's advice, I would suggest that you NOT delete your account.  Simply downgrade it from Premium to Basic.  If you don't hold land and don't have any Classified ads, and don't belong to any groups that charge their members for THEIR search listings, you won't get any charges.  Your account will rest peacefully until you decide to return to Second Life.

I suggest this because we hear from people all the time asking, "Can I reactivate an old account?"  You can, but it costs ten bucks and you may not get all your inventory or $L back.
