so what happens when you bought something inworld a few years ago and now it does not work and the creator no longer logs in

It really depends on what part is not working...if for example it requires an external data server perhaps? Please add more details as to exactly what is not working.

There is nothing you can do but toss it and buy something to replace it.

SL upgrades and code changes will sometimes break content, particularly scripted things.  Even if the creator logged in everyday, they are not responsible for fixing everything that they sold years ago and no longer works because SL has changed, particularly after years.  All a creator can do is make sure the item works when it is sold and there are no defects.  So if the item worked a few years ago but doesn't now due to changes in the server code, that is not their fault.

In RL when television was required to be broadcast in digital format, you didn't go the manufacturer of your analog TV that you bought a few years ago and expect a new television did you?
