Yes, I friend people on occasion but I let them know the invite is coming first. I also friend people "temporarily" to get their calling card which I use in all kinds of ways... and yes I tell them to be ready for unfriending too! :matte-motes-big-grin:

I like getting friend requests rather then asking. I feel like I am pestering them if I ask them. If they liked me enough they will ask me. Sounds bad but I hate being a burden on anyone. The rare occasion I do send one out I always modify it to something relevent in our conversation, something funny, or both.

... Of course, the problem is they may be playing by the same rules.  They may be thinking "I won't send her a friend request, because that would be pestering.  If she wants to be my friend she will request me"  And then nobody sends any friend requests.

I have never requested friendship, it neither worries me whether I have or have none. All the friends I have in RL or SL  have a common interest, either academic, artistic, cultural or just a chat to chill. It not something I ever thought about.  Never had short term friends. Everyone is different so what works for one will not for another. As a note, freindship for the sake of it to me is pointless.
